I just happened to be listening lately when this song came on and was surprised to hear a name mentioned..just one time..but I decided to record it for the Name Game... Jim Croce was in the military when this song came to him...standing in line with his fellow military personnel all waiting their turn to call home...and he would hear a lot of Dear John stories being played out... What makes this song so interesting to me is that in the early 70s I was a long distance operator...working the night shift...when all the Mars calls came in..military calling home from all over...I loved that job...working the switchboard...one ringy dingy...
