KARAOKE SCENE MAGAZINE ONLINE! - ChetBassetti performs California Dreamin on Karaoke Showcase - The song was written in 1963 while John Phillips and Michelle Phillips were living in New York City during a particularly cold winter, and she was missing sunny California. He would work on tunes late at night and one morning brought her the first verse. The single was released in late 1965 but was not an immediate breakthrough. the song peaked at No. 4 in March 1966 on both the Billboard Hot 100, lasting 17 weeks, Michelle Phillips wrote the lyrics, "Well, I got down on my knees, and I pretend to pray," but Cass Elliot had been singing "I began to pray" until corrected by Phillips when they were touring. She sang "began" on the original recording. I always (untill reading this on wiki) that is was "began" but pretend makes more sense since he went into the church just to get warm. Joyce did all the work on this one (no vocals on this backing track)..hats off to her re-creation as good as and clearer than the original (the tech in 1965 not so good?) Thanks for your listens from Joyce&I...Chet

Reply: Abby...BIG BIG thank you for such great comments!.. And you know..I think there must be sooo much interesting stuff about every song ever written... The people that made these songs create them to describe the joy and pain of what they have witnessed... We are just the lucky recipients of that process.... Thanks so much on behalf of Joyce& myself for your stopping by!!! ...Chet
