KARAOKE SCENE MAGAZINE ONLINE! - ChetBassetti performs Talking Old Soldiers on Karaoke Showcase - "Talking Old Soldiers" is a song by Elton John with lyrics by Bernie Taupin. It is the ninth track (fourth track on side two) of his third studio album, Tumbleweed Connection in 1970. The song tells the story of chance meeting of a young man and an old man inside a bar. The old man describes his loneliness and his former comrades who died in combat. It is implied—"I've seen enough to have a man go out his brains"—that the old man has PTSD. The old man also thanks the young man for listening; no one else in the bar would. In a Rolling Stone interview, John said that it "was a very David Ackles-influenced song." In fact, the album itself is dedicated "with love to David." This is my favorite EJ song from his past with songwriter Bernie T. After they split, EJ got more into POP songs, but, what a talent he still is. I don't know how he re-invented his singing after his vocal chord problems with surgery in 1987 but ..he did..Chet

Cantstopsinging First off when you began, I thought it was Elton for a split second. I liked how you panned the 2 conversation.. Clear as bell recording.. and the conversation style of your vocals were exceptional. A best of best, imo... wow
Reply: Joyce...I posted this one elsewhere recently and including those comments..u r the first one that noticed (or at least mentioned) the panning..do u listen (like I do) with headphones on?..anywho..I truly value your comments and insights...thanks so much..Chet

mav2100 This is so intimate and so passionate, Chet. If I close my eyes I picture you at the piano singing in my favorite club big Brandy snifter for well deserved tips. Piano Man style. Wow love that High note near the end. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... this is so intense. I have never heard this song nor saw a track made for it so you are so owning it for me. There is stand in the audience cellphone lit looking for an encore. Loving this, Chet! Great Sing! Mwahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, Pam
Reply: I'll do the encore..right after I grab that snifter full of $$ :)..thanks so much Pam!...Chet

Reply: Yes..my dad was a WW2 vet..he told me some stories, but, refused to tell the many more that he had seen (he went thru the concentration camps)...thanks for your listen my friend!...Chet
