The thing is, 90% of the people doing this, suck and have no business hosting karaoke. They're using sh*t equipment, have no clue how to use it and make singers sound good, have no people skills, operate illegally, and plainly... just don't care. They're just in it to make a quick buck. They give karaoke a bad name.
Sadly, someone who is a true professional, cares about their singers, uses the best equipment and has great people skills, is very rare.

Sorry. I disagree with the consensus.
Karaoke was made to be hosted and different by each person. I feel like more people need to accept that. That's how karaoke has come this far along. People doing it differently, which includes playing darts, etc. You may think that it's unprofessional, but it is what it is.
I do think some KJs can't welcome other KJs and we should welcome all KJs no matter who or what they do or how good or bad they are. I was gonna make a thread about this. I showed up to a KJs show late last year, randomly, at a place I worked at for years but moved on, and decided that I wasn't going to criticize, interfere, judge in anyway, I wasn't even going to sing. I was going to just watch and observe and see the positive. When the KJ played songs, I got up and danced. I didn't sing. I let others sing and didn't take up space. I stayed over an hour. Sounds like a waste of time, but it was refreshing. I liberated myself from thinking I have to tell a KJ this or that or suggest a song to play, that's lame, let a KJ be a KJ and do them, every show was meant to be different. Just enjoy what's before you and let it go is my advice. Don't judge the sound, don't criticize the KJ for being lazy, it's 2026, everyone does things differently.
I went to a show with a friend late last year and between us we mocked the KJ's song selection and mocked their wild rotation struggles. We were just joking between the 2 of us, we're both KJs, just the two of us. Now, I feel terrible for doing that and won't do that anymore, even though it was only the 2 of us privately mocking and we're 2 KJs mocking a 3rd KJ privately. That's lame, to me. That's snob behavior to me. I'm a KJ, I should know better. That's when I went by myself to check out a different KJ by myself and just sat and observed for an hour without being critical, etc.
by the way I write this not to attack anyone specifically or directly for how they feel, if they feel differently
one more thing to add on if it helps: my latest journey on 'giving all KJs a pass if I can help it' started with this: i know this fellow KJ and I'd never say it publicly, but privately I believed this fellow KJ could never work any places I worked at or fill in my shoes. Recently, I realized, many years later, this KJ actually worked at a place a lil while where I once worked many years before. True, he worked under different decade, different staff, but still at the same venue. It was humbling to see that--someone I scoffed at as a fellow KJ thinking this dude could never fill my shoes. That was so wrong of me. Very wrong. Don't match my egotistic mistakes...
again, hopefully nobody takes my reply as a personal attack

i gave up judging. "their equipment is cheap garbage" yep, and their rotation is full, MOST singers don't care "their sound sucks" yep, and their rotation is full, MOST singers don't care "they don't even try to make it good" yep, and their rotation is full, MOST singers don't care "their selection sucks" yep, and their rotation is full, MOST singers don't care "thier personality is non-existent" yep, and their rotation is full, MOST singers don't care "they just sit there and call names" yep, and their rotation is full, MOST singers don't care "they just put youtube on the screen" yep, and their rotation is full, MOST singers don't care
the sad fact is most singers don't care about anything at all anymore. at this point i'm having people stand LITERALLY in front of the speaker as i call their name 3 times to sing and not notice, then come ask me when they are up. Do some? absolutely they do and we all have some of them, but MOST do not anymore. to be successful in karaoke now takes 2 things 1) a microphone (quality is irrelevant, just needs to make noise) 2) the song they want to sing (CDG, MP4, or Youtube is irrelevant as is quality of the track, just needs to be the song. even a Youtube lyric video over the complete song with the singer will be ok for most of this crowd.)
that's it, and many times it unfortunately seems the worse the show, the better attended it is.
i have too many host friends who really care and try their best with weak showings while a block down the road the idiot with a LITERAL home stereo, wired amazon mic plugged direct (no mixer even) and playing Youtube with commercials and all is full to the rafters.
i love what i do, but the reality hurts
