Well I will probably be regretting it when I get my long distance bill next month, but I did attend the webinar for the proposed National Karaoke Association.

I must say i was pleasantly surprised.

First of all, my impressions of William were completely wrong. He seemed to genuinely care about what was going on, he tried to answer all of my concerns as best he could, considering that I do not reside in the US.

some of the things I find encouraging

1. They plan to involve the writers association,
2. They want hosts AND singers involved
3. They seem to have a long term goal of affecting change of the way karaoke is made in the US.

Granted, I am still extremely skeptical, and at this point I would not be willing to put any money on it BUT I am a hell of a lot more hopeful about the whole process than I was before I attended the webinar.

I encourage those who can keep an open mind to attend the Friday session it should be in your email if you signed up for information before hand.

P.S. Chris it was interesting to hear you speak, you sound nothing like I had imagined, but now it makes me want to go to one of your shows even more.

I also attended the seminar and was also pleasantly surprised. In spite of my trying to get people to keep an open mind in the other thread bashing the NKA, I am highly skeptical. But William seems to have a somewhat solid framework in place. Of course execution is going to determine what really happens so that we will have to wait and see on.

I think the single biggest roadblock to success to going to be getting the word out. There were only 7 people on the webinar. When there are hundreds, I will feel much more positive about it.

Did he discuss in what manner the NKA wishes to get Singers involved?

What kind of changes in the way Karaoke is made was he referring to? Is it regarding the actual song tracks and the way they are produced (physical media and downloaded files), or was it some discussion about the licensing of song tracks made available in the US?

Details in writing would be great. I've also felt that ALL aspects, including singers, needs to be considered. In the end, it's their hard earned dollars which fuels this industry. Also, addressing the publishing issues would be a great platform to start with. Yes, piracy is an issue but you will never get one part of this industry to agree on a possible solution, much less two parts or three. Easing publishing restrictions would mean easier paths to more content which means easier paths to purchasing. Easier purchasing saved the recording industry from certain death, and I don't think I am exaggerating.

I'll keep my open mind, wait and see approach.

My suggestion would be to outline VALUE ADDED for all five segments, including publishers. As someone pointed out in another thread, no one wants to throw their money at something similar to the KIAA deal.

Might I suggest to all that did not attend the webinars but have questions, attend the next one (I will post when it is scheduled). At that time, you chan have the chance to ask your questions directly instead of third hand.

To the best of my understanding, singers would have full voting rights and input the same as any other paying member. Now that may change because of my suggestions and wish to join, even tho I am in Canada. They are concerned about the legalities of someone joining outside of the US.

Also, it was my undertanding that one of the long term goals is to try and raise support to get the actual laws changed.

ok, so just for anyone who may even be slightly curious I thought I would post the email that I sent to William after I attendended the original seminar. After his initital response, I did get a really interesting second email, I will let people know more if anything comes of it.
