KARAOKE SCENE MAGAZINE ONLINE! - JA.MARTINEZ performs I TRY on Karaoke Showcase - This tune is dedicated to all the peeps out there who remain passionate about music and the art of singing. By this, I mean those individuals whose recording efforts reflect a sincere desire to give the listener an entertaining "show" whenever they present a song on the showcase. As humans, we all know no one is perfect, but, you can't knock a person who strives for perfection, especially, when they're doing something they love beyond words (e.g., their job, a given sport, car restorations, the art of drawing, bird watching, scrap-booking, and yes, even, singing). Clearly, the end result doesn't have to be bulletproof, but, how on earth could anyone expect a song that's been recorded in a single take to be remotely entertaining (even the Pros won't try this if they can help it)? This attitude truly baffles me. At Karaoke, for example, I absolutely love it when I hear a singer deliver the lyrics with great timing, emotion and an ability to add vibrato or change octaves, smoothly, while maintaining total command of the voice box. On the other hand, when I see/hear someone perform a song that sounds as if the singer hasn't practiced, I can't help but visualize myself falling into the same embarrassing circumstance, should I arrive on the scene unprepared to sing a song of my own choosing (believe me, I've flubbed-up plenty of times in spite of practicing). I, for one, CRINGE, anytime someone gets up on stage and proceeds to butcher a song, pro or amateur. Also, the excuse that because karaoke singers are not professionals and do not have access to tools as sophisticated as those used by Pros, "amateurs" should never aspire to perform at the same or higher level, doesn't hold water in my book. It seems to me that peeps who buy into this logic just don't get the point that many amateurs do care and do try to put their best foot forward each and every time they get a turn under the spotlight (i.e., karaoke or otherwise). When I first started singing and, later, recording, I knew nothing about how to properly mix a song. I built my crappy little home studio for less than $500.00 and took the time to practice my vocal/recording techniques by manipulating the tools at my disposal to the "very best" of my ability. I did this with the same degree of focus and enthusiasm I've applied throughout my professional life, as an IT manager and salesperson (i.e., a common thread between my work and singing; they're both extremely challenging and fun, fun, fun to achieve success in). I submit this song as proof that an amateur can deliver the goods, in much the same way any professional singer does. All the vocal parts on this recording are mine. I've added doubling and multiple recorded tracks, throughout, in an effort to give the audience a semblance of the original. My only regret is that I could not find a worthy karaoke backing and had to create a VR backing track, instead. Now, here is my version of accomplished R&B/soul singer, actress and songwriter Macy Gray's Grammy Award-winning hit, "I Try". I absolutely love her distinctive voice and singing style. She packs a punch like few others, in the business. "I Try", which is known as her signature song, is the second single released from her popular 1999 debut album, "On How Life Is" (7-million copies sold, worldwide). I hope everyone enjoys this incredibly soulful song. Let me know what you think. As Lady Dee so eloquently reminds us, "Keep on Keeping on" - LOL. Sequenzzer Very nice indeed...The feelin' is there, liked the double tracking on the vocal, fits very well for this tune. Look forward to hearing your submissions,as I know you are one of a few that takes time to practice the song, produce a quality recording, and take pride in your submissions. My cyber lighter(even though I don't smoke)is up in the air and lit for ya.Keep those recordings coming! Do you take requests? I have a few up my sleeve that I think you could nail.LOL
Reply: Hey Sequenzzer, Truly appreciating your comments on this sing, buddy. I know that in terms of the effort we both put into our mixes we're cut of the same cloth - we care a lot about the product we produce, especially, when putting it out there for an audience. This R&B tune was a real challenge for me, on a number of levels. It definitely took some extra work to accomplish the desired effect. I am very much open to suggestions about songs I might on take on. Let me know your thoughts. John

Connie Hi John, I can't totally agree with your opinions in your description, but do applaud you for the effort you put in your singing and recording. You enjoy what you do. I think both poor and good singers with good or lousy recording devices have a right to post a song on Singer's Showcase and it's up to individuals to decide who they want to listen to. My recordings are less than stellar, and right now, I can't even record, hence, all resubs until I figure out how to record on Windows8 with "Reaper". But for now, being summer and spending lots of time outside, I "may" go back to it in the fall. You did a good job on this song, it's not a song I'd expect you to cover, but you put your own style into it, did a good job overlapping vocal parts and effects that give it a distinct and cool sound.
Reply: Connie, I think you may have misunderstood my point(s). IMO, it's kind of useless to see peeps posting songs they want critiqued when they clearly haven't done much practicing before uploading them to SS. Additionally, we've read comments from certain individuals who declare that because SS members are all amateurs, we have no business thinking we can put together mixes that sound as good the pros. I performed this song precisely because it was a challenge to do. TY & Rock On, sweetie! John

KaraTroll It is a great pleasure for me to let you know what I think regarding your submission, John: it is a convincing work you have shown us here. You really took the challenge to produce an excellent work with all its efforts required for it. So you here demonstrate your amazing ability to combine your outstanding musical skills with your definite claim to achieve a most possible perfect result. And I agree with you that this is a MUST for our professional life as well (as a software developer I must be a perfectionist anyway!). So thank you so much for your exceptional submission. Kara
Reply: Hey Kara, Software engineer, eh! I can definitely relate to that kind of mine set, friend - LOL. I had a great career and found the folks in the business to be some of the most enlightened, perceptive and, basically, "realistic" peeps on earth. Let me say how much I appreciate you stopping by to give my recording a listen & provide me with such kind words on my performance. I don't sub many R&B tunes but love the genre & talented artists who work their audiences like nobody's business. John

P Tucker Wow John.....that was quite a rant! I know what you mean though.....I can't remember when I ever got a sonf perfectly enjoyable even after 10 tries! lol Rarely ever a onetaker. Some people are naturals.....some will never sound good enough no matter what....hence the name "karaoke". lol. I like your Sublime or Counting Crows.....this is good, but it doesn't fit your image......Rock On Man!
Reply: Perry, How ya doing, bro! Just letting certain peeps at SS know that there are many of us who care "passionately" about any project/task we take on. I know everyone's not the same but it really bugs me when someone thinks he's speaking for the entire membership when he says no one cares about sounding like a Pro (you or I may not sound like Pros but there's nothing wrong with making every effort to give the listener a good show). You know I'm a ROCKER, first & foremost. THAT IS MY IMAGE! John
