Hi everyone. I've tried to hold back from expressing an opinion, but, this situation really sticks in my craw, so here goes. I can't get past seeing/hearing peeps comment that a given song they're subbing was recorded in a single take or five minutes before they had to leave for an appointment or, worse yet, statements like, " . . . I know that I'm off in spots but I hope you like it anyway . . ." (I'm sure most of you have read similar comments). It goes without saying that the majority of these subs sound pretty bad, with a myriad of miscues that include problems associated with key, pitch and or timing. How could anyone call such recordings, entertaining? On the other hand, I absolutely love listening to a member's rendition that exhibits a methodical and balanced delivery, especially, when he/she successfully captures the granular delicacies of an original, including tonal/tension nuances, together, in a properly prepared mix (a golden nugget that's a rare find, indeed, but oh so much fun to be a part of). Such efforts show an obvious passion for singing that leaves me savoring every note and excited to hear what the singer comes up with next. A recording that doesn't reflect practice and consistency in one's delivery cannot be taken serious, especially, when one solicits critical commentary. Why would anyone want others to hear their crappy recordings (let alone comment on them)? For me, less quantity and more quality makes for a much better singer and a more entertaining SS, overall. A December 2012 release, "Who Did That To You?" was written and performed by John Legend, in the hopes Quentin Tarantino would use it in his new movie soundtrack, "Django Unchained". Legend penned the song even before Tarantino asked him to do so after reading an advanced copy of the script, only a month before the film's release date. For those not familiar with the movie, it tells a story of undying love between two black salves trying to escape the harsh realities of life on a southern plantation, just prior to the start of the Civil War. Presented from the perspective of a German immigrant bounty hunter and the slave he rescues, frees and then employs to hunt down his prey (i.e., wanted fugitives and a promise to help the former slave rescue his lady). In typical Tarantino fashion, the bodies stack-up and the blood flows, in generous quantities, as the plot thickens - LMAO! Definitely not for the squeamish, it is all about serious retribution, as the movie's protagonist, Django, takes steps to avenge his lover's honor. He's determined to not only find his wife, but also make everyone who hurt her pay, dearly, for the god-awful treatment she's been forced to live through (of course, this turns out to be mostly white men). Tarantino, makes no apologies while weaving a masterpiece of sight and sound, which, obviously, focuses on a politically-themed storyline; one that continues to be controversial and hotly debated among Americans and peeps across the globe ever since its release last December (and roughly 150 years after the Civil War). I think this is Tarantino's best one yet (seems like I say the same thing every time a new QT movie hits the streets - LOL). "Who Did That To You?" is a unique and challenging song with lots of tonal changes on display, within the vocal arrangement. These characteristics made the song very appealing to me. I used VR software (e.g. MTU's Vogone) to create this backing since I couldn't find an available karaoke version. All background vocals are mine. I hope you find this cool song an entertaining listen - this gritty tune may actually grow on you, as it did for me. TC. John. www.novatechsolutions.com/MYSONGLIST/R&B/Who Did That To You_HS.mp3 |
