Yep, that's me, Johnny Islands (a stage name I've used on and off, for years, now), being introduced to an overwhelmingly enthusiastic audience at the Royal Albert Hall, in far away London town. As the superbly played guitar intro to an old Texas ditty, "Sweet Little Angel", began to fill the cavernous Hall, I was taken-back to see some of the finest blues guitar men on the planet waiting there, patiently, on that hallowed stage for me to take the mic and start belting out this gritty classic! I couldn't help but wonder if my eyes were playing tricks on me, 'cause, there, in living color was B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Albert Collins, Freddie King, Jeff Beck and Buddy Guy, all together, playing the blues, as I proceeded to give the performance of my life!
Creating this VR backing/recording presented me with a pretty tough challenge. The song's slow tempo made delivery of the lyrics difficult to convey, relative to timing and phrasing, with the specific goal of making my interpretation, both, believable (i.e. tonal nuances) and entertaining (i.e., story-telling). I ended-up with a recording that's actually a composite of several singer's versions of the song, with some ad-libbing thrown in, for good measure - LOL (i.e., B.B. King, Freddie King, and Leon Russell). It's a matter of record that the evolution of many of these old songs is based more on a tradition of improvisation (i.e., verbally handed-down tomes put to music), rather than the meticulous crafting of lyrics to melody, as is typically done in a studio setting. This song, like many others from the "Chitin' Circuit" era may not be to everyone's liking but I'd still like to hear what folks think of my recording, if listeners would be so kind as to offer their input. Thank you, in advance, for your listens and comments. Take good care, to all.
Oh Yeah, I almost forgot! It was a couple of Sunday mornings ago that my wife, Gracie, abruptly woke me up from a deep sleep, pointedly asking me what the heck was I dreaming about and what was up with that SILLY SMIRK, etched across my sleeping face. Still basking in the surreal images of the previous night's "dream-come-through" performance, I quickly responded, "Well, baby, If I told you the who and what of last night's amazing doings, you probably wouldn't believe it no matter how I explained it", as I let out a loud WHOOOO, stepped into the shower and happily started to sing my encore - LMAO! John.
