Here's my rendition of a classic Mexican song I previously recorded, which I'm betting the majority of SS's current lineup of singers have not yet heard. Although I was familiar with several variations of the song from my earliest memories, it was fellow rocker, Mark Cheetah, who suggested I sing a reworked version of this enduring Mexican standard. I had never heard this song performed with such an edgy delivery until I listened to this rock-infused arrangement by the Austin, Texas-based group, 'Chingon'. This band's power-amped rendition will rock your soul, regardless of whether or not you understand the lingo! I was so blown away by Chingon's version I resolved to record my own rendition no matter how difficult or time-consuming the task. Not surprisingly, I ended-up putting more time into this project than any other previous recording I've attempted. Aside from the problem of singing lyrics in rapid-fire Spanish, the song required holding notes for an extended period of time, which took a good number of takes before I was finally satisfied with the results (note: I used a phonetically prepared script since I'm not proficient in Spanish). "Malaguena Salerosa", composed by Elpidio Ramirez and Pedro Galindo is considered one of Mexico's all-time classics. It's been recorded by innumerable artists from around the globe since making its debut, in 1947. Also known as La Malaguena, the song is typical of the Son Huasteco or Huapango singing style, influenced by Spanish and indigenous cultures. Unique to the northeastern region of Mexico, singers use a falsetto technique, stretching a given vowel for as long as their breath holds out. In the song, a man tells a woman from Malaga, Spain how beautiful she is, and how he would love to be her man, but, understands her rejecting him for being too poor. I hope you enjoy my chigonized cover of this great classic (I'll definitely take a siesta from doing more Spanish songs, at least, for the time-being - LMAO)! John.
