KARAOKE SCENE MAGAZINE ONLINE! - JA.MARTINEZ performs GREENSLEEVES on Karaoke Showcase - A holiday favorite enjoyed by people from all corners of the planet, "Greensleeves" is a traditional English folk song that's long been rumored to have been penned by England's King Henry VIII. It's said Henry composed it as an ode to his lover and future queen consort, Anne Boleyn (i.e., before things went south-LOL). This is likely a romanticized falsehood, since the song's style didn't reach England until 35 years, after the King's death. In researching the song, I learned that Henry was a skilled athlete, scholar and musician, traits that were not as well known as were the scandalous tales of those six marriages he partook in, during his 38-year reign. With this latter point in mind, I've taken some liberties with both the song's tempo and lyrics to present a special rendition, which puts the story of Anne Boleyn into perspective, relative to the historical facts of her brief sojourn at the House of Tudor, as Henry's second wife (i.e., Boleyn was arrested May 2, 1536 for the crimes of treason and adultery, found guilty and beheaded on May 19, freeing the King to marry, again). Most historians, generally, agree that Anne's most serious crime was simply not being able to bear, Henry, a son and, thus, a succeeeding heir to the throne. I hope you enjoy my take on this classic tune and not walk away from your listen thinking any less of the tune or of its beautiful melody. Here are the additional lyrics I've written: A NEW DAY, A NEW AGE/ IN THE HOUSE OF TUDOR/ YEA, YOUR GREENSLEEVES ONCE ROCKED ME/ YOUR SCENT THAT ONCE INTOXICATED/ NOW REPULSES/ I DISSED SPAIN, OUR ALLY AND THE POPE, AS WELL/ TO DECLARE MY LOVE AND HONOR YOU AS QUEEN/ ALAS, YOUR REIGN WAS BRIEF, FULL OF GASTLY DEEDS/ NOW FAREWELL, ADIEU, TREACHEROUS ANNE!/ GUILTY OF HIGH TREASON 'N ADULTERY, AS JUDGED/ DENYING YOUR GUILT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE, I SAY/ YOU'LL PART WITH YOUR HEAD AT FIRST LIGHT, ON THIS DAY/ A SWIFT END TO YOU, WITH ONE STROKE OF THE BLADE! I wish everyone a very happy Christmas and New Year's holiday experience. John. http://www.novatechsolutions.com/MYSONGLIST/CLASSIC ROCK/Greensleeves_HS.mp3
