| Description: |
Back on Jan. 14, my SS buddy, Bamakid, posted an awesome rendition of a great old classic, "Since I Don't Have You". Released originally by the Skyliners, in Dec. 1958, the song reached the #12 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and also the Top 5 on the R&B Charts. This popular tune, done in the doo-wop style of the fifties is considered by many music critics to be one of the best 'heartbreak' ballads ever recorded and is still played on most 'oldies' radio stations.
In his song description, Bamakid, noted that the song's been covered by many artists, through the years, including Guns 'N Roses. After my listen, I told him that I had posted a cover of GNR's version back in '08 and might go ahead and re-sub it again, and thus, give SS members a chance to compare to two versions, at their leisure. GNR, a quintessential hard rock group of the first order, re-introduced the song to the delight of many peeps, old and new, alike, with their very cool and different cover, in their '94 album, entitled, "The Spaghetti Incident". My sing, for the most part, remains true to the GNR version. Leave it to Axl Rose, GNR's lead vocalist to give us a slightly different take on that '58 gem, as was so beautifully reproduced by Bamakid in his Jan. rendition.
I hope you find this 'rockified' version of the old Doo Wop classic as much fun to listen to as I found it to be when I recorded it (this new mix replaces my original dynamic mic recording, of same). Appreciating all who stop by to listen and or leave a comment. Take care, friends.

Holy Electric Guitar Intro Brother John!! Wooooooooo hoooooooooo!!! That was so freakin intense!! Makes my blood run a lil quicker. A bit like Anti-freeze I think. LOL! I know the song, but never heard it done like this. I think this is the new JA Martinez Favorite of mine. I LOVE this!! Wow!! Excellent!! Yessssssssss!! You ROCK!! Keep em coming, Love ya, Mwahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, Pam |
Reply: Hey Pam,
Yes, I agree! It was the lead-in guitar work that hooked me right away - the first time I heard this version. The song was challenging start to finish (especially that ending that required holding notes in a consistent manner for an extended period of time - LOL). Thanks Pammy for the very kind words - you're the best, girl. Loving ya, back!

Hi John, I'm not familiar with the Guns and Roses version, but I sure liked your voice and singing on it, especially the ending with the Ohhhhh, yeeeeaaaah! A GREAT listen! |
Reply: Hi Connie,
I know lots of folks, even many rockers, aren't familiar with this version (AR was going through a difficult time, in '96, with lots of personnel changes at the time the album was recorded). I'm happy to hear you enjoyed your listen and actually hung-in there right through the nutty ending - LOL! Believe it or not the verses right before the end were not easy to put together (took three takes to feel good about it - LOL).
