I just recorded this song and "Don'cha Go 'Way Mad" last night, so these are fresh. My voice problems are resolved now, just with the passage of time and better reflux control. TMI? : ) This song was written by Joel Herron (music) and Jack Wolf and Frank Sinatra (lyrics) in 1951. What a heartbreaking song of a love not fully returned and an extremely unfaithful lover. Sinatra's contribution to the lyrics probably relates to his chronic worries and arguments with his second wife, Ava Gardner, who matched Sinatra in sexual appetite and adventures. So, I guess Frank is crying crocodile tears. Sinatra recorded the song twice -- in 1951 with an Axel Stordahl arrangement; and in 1957 with a Gordon Jenkins arrangement. I'm singing over a Pocket Songs instrumental based on the 1957 version; it is an impressive copy of the original instrumentation. -- Donn |
