I have been to Japan several times on business...I never figured singing a Japenese song was gonna be easier than singing an Italian song...but it was. The phonetic words are use in the karaoke version and if you remember that every letter in the words is pronounced..then it is actually quite easy to follow and sing..plus this is a pretty short song. (the whislting was the hardest part) Sukiyaki is the name givin the song for us english people..the song has nothing to do with it here are some tidbits on the song/artist from wikipedia... A Newsweek columnist noted that the re-titling was like issuing "Moon River" in Japan under the title "Beef Stew." "Ue o muite aruko" ("[I] shall walk looking up") by Kyu Sakamoto in 1963, and was the only Japanese language song to hit the top of the US charts. The lyrics start as follows: ue o muite aruko (I shall walk looking up) namida ga kobore nai yo ni (so my tears won't fall) omoidasu haru no hi (remembering spring days) hitori bocchi no yoru (on this lonely night) Kinda sad lyrics for such a bouncy song. Kyu Sakamoto was one of the 520 people who died in the crash of Japan Airlines Flight 123 in Gunma Prefecture on August 12, 1985. He was 43. Always most liked it too, though I couldn't understand it, I felt the lyrics were probably very touchng. Most enjoyed reading the facts around it, thanks...and...your whistling is just TOPS ...Chet, you sound just terrific singing this, a keeper for sure.
