KARAOKE SCENE MAGAZINE ONLINE! - OoRIKoO performs God Bless The Child on Karaoke Showcase - In 1985 (when I was still with my rock band "Harlow") at the Bleaker St. Studios in New York City we were waiting for our manager to arrive and decided to warm up a bit. There was a session horn group there and the engineer "Tommy Yensen" suggested we try the "Blood Sweat And Tears" version of "God Bless The Child". Here's what Tommy captured that Saturday morning. Later that afternoon Tommy told me I should be singing Jazz. LOL "God Bless The Child" was written by Billie Holiday and Arthur Herzog Jr. in 1939 and first recorded on May 9, 1941, by Billie Holiday. In her autobiography Lady Sings the Blues Holiday indicated that during an argument with her mother over money her mother said "God bless the child that's got his own." Her anger over the incident led Holiday to use the line as the starting point for this song. The song is both "sacred and profane," as it references the Bible while indicating that religion seems to have no effect in making people treat each other better.
