I have been prescribed this new drug by my doctor to help me quit smoking.  It is very new to the US. It is called Chantix.  Has anyone every used this to stop?  Since it is not a nicotine replacement I am thinking it is a better way to quit.  Throught the program they got me taking the meds the first 7 days while I continue to smoke...

It is kinda a weird feeling, I know I want to quit and I have set my quit date. I have told everyone that I know I am quitting. And I signed up for the chantix web support also.  Is there anything else I need to do other than follow the program and stay away from smoking situations?

I think I am rambleing..I guess the point of all of this is I am asking for everyone's support on here...

<in my best Bartles and james voice* Thank you for your support.

Hey Sharon, congratulations on your decision to quit smoking! It's gotta be one of the toughest if not the toughest thing to stop doing for a lot of people.  Unfortunately, I can't offer one word of real advice -- I've never smoked a ciggy in my life.  I may get lung cancer from all the second hand smoke I've inhaled though!

Did your doc explain to you exactly what this new medication is supposed to do, I mean technically speaking? Just curious.

Anyway, GO SHARON! :)

Yes, he did and then he told me to go to their website and read about it and make up my mind and call him after I had made my decision and then he would call the prescription into the pharmacy for me.  That's exactly what I did.

This stuff blocks the receptors that the nicotine goes to.  It's kinda complicated.  You can read about it on their website.  It explains it with pictures and everything.

So you're already withdrawing from it?

About 5 years ago I quit cold-turkey It took every ounce of will power i could pull out of this old body..

I had 40 dozen mimts and spent 3 days in a small apt on the couch...

I want you to ask yourself Do I Love Me?  If the answer is yes then tell self then why punish self?  Tell self I want need must and will quit........The desirer to be healty must be greater and more persevernt than the addiction..  Use auto-suggestion Look into the mirror and say I Will Quit Smoking 10 times before you go to bed...

Way to go girl! You know I am behind you! My only advice is to NOT start easting everything in sight they way I did. BUt I don't think you will have that problem.

If it gets too tough, come over here and we can send Chuck over to your place. Or maybe more shopping therapy....

Good for you Sharon!  :worship: You sound determined and ready...

...can I ask what it was that made you decide to do this? I know about all the health reasons, but was there a specific event, person or epiphany that made you decide once and for all that you are going to do this?

I've never been a smoker myself but I do have loved ones who smoke. I also know it's one tough habit to break. My brother went cold turkey about ten years ago and hit the gym and drastically changed his eating habits to healthier choices. Now, at 60 years old he's healthier now than ever. Best thing he ever did!

That's great that you have a support group, that should be of great help.

Much love and support!

I always said when I was young that when they got to $1.00 a pack I would quit.  That has long come and gone.  I am not sure what the exact motivation is.  It is really a combination of things.....

My health - I have been getting winded just walking - I'm thin I shouldn't be getting winded and I have no other health problems either, so I need to quit before I get other health problems.

My Family - I wanna watch my grandkids be born and grow up

Looks - I am getting smokers wrinkles around my mouth - oooo gross!!  Maybe I am vain.. But I don't want to start aging really fast...Most of the women in my family look really old and I have been blessed with a young look, I would like to preserve my looks as long as possible.

Death - I have watched more than 1 family member die from Lung cancer - I am talking so many I can't even count them any more... And another one was just diagnosed right before Christmas - 20% chance......

My smell - tired of people prejudging me cause they smell smoke on me

Going places - you really can't go anywhere anymore - Everything is going no smoking - I have been feeling like a prisoner to the cigarettes - Always wondering when I can have my next one

Cost - For the amount that I would be spending on cigs this year I could do a wonderful trip around the country to sing with everyone here....

So it is really a collection of things...I am not sure which one was the deciding factor.. But I am glad that I made this decision.

Congrats Sharon. If you're still online we are having a party in Yahoo Messenger right now, it's non-smoking.

still quite cheap compared to here. Not taking the exchange rate into consideration because in this case one must look at a dollar for dollar value. Ie what your dollar buys in the US and what our $ buys here.
I think last time I looked at tailor mades they were around $10
I roll my own and I think last time I bought a 50gram pack it was over $20. But since husband has been out of the country a lot this last year we are still smoking duty free

Unfortunately my current insurance wouldn't cover it.. But many will cover part of it you should check and see...Many times it is a situation where you mail them the receipt and they send you a check...

My cost for a one month supply was $114.00.  Which is far less than what I would be spending on the cigs with the recent increase we had...

I actually took up karaoke because I quit smoking.

I had never sung other than "Happy Birthday", Christmas carols, and
standing around the once-a-year piano at a party. I quit smoking for 11 months
when my daughter was born (no, it is not OK to have just one) and noticed
that my voice got better when I quit.

Then just before I quit this last time, I happened to a family dinner
at a restaurant that had karaoke. Everyone had fun, and people actually
clapped when I got up and did "What a Wonderful World". I decided I
would take up singing if I quit again.

I quit cold turkey in June of 2005. My father volunteered to take a trip
with me, to help me stay off it the first two weeks. I spent the first
four days in a cabin in the Pennsylvania woods. His being there helped
me to not get in the car and run for cigarettes. We then traveled around
some and that helped me make it past the first two weeks.

Once you get past two weeks cold turkey, I personally believe you are
free of it and that you don't ever have to smoke again if you don't
want to. If I think about smoking, I think not about buying a pack --
I think about buying 10 cartons. Because that is what I will be buying
if I smoke just one.

I use singing as an incentive to not smoke. Of course being the way I
am, now I am obsessed with that as I was with smoking. But at least it
is healthier!

Micky!!!! Way to go!! what will power you must have had!!!

Thanks for sharing your quit story with me. You are truly an inspiration to me.

I'd like to add to my list of reasons to quit. ( I can do that cause it's my thread LOL)

Singing - There are songs that I know I could do but can't cause I can't get enough air in my lungs.  I remembered this as I was singing just now at the house...So when I start getting my lungs free from all the junk in there..Watch out!! I'll really be belting them out..Maybe I'll even get voice lessons...

You'll be able to afford them; mine cost less per month than my smoking habit did. Of course all the CDGs and sound equipment I have bought laid waste to the idea of saving money -- but I am having a genuine blast.

Hi Isis--this is what I was taking to help quit.  You have to follow a schedule (the doctor will fill you in on this--you go up and down and off) but I haven't had a cigarette in over a month and no urge now.  I've tried cold turkey, "the patch" and Wellbutrin to no avail so I'd suggest you give it a try.  I can't hurt!  Take care, Michael
