Here's a theoretical question for everyone...

If you could start all over from scratch, knowing what you do now, what equipment would you buy? I'll be gigging in various sports bars around town and reception halls for weddings. I like the idea of Mackie SWA1801 powered subs and Carvin powered mains for ease of multi amping, set up, tear down, etc. From there however, it's a free-for-all! Have fun...!

If I could start over... I probably wouldn't start. I would still be happily married to one of my first two wives. live in a nice house with a picket fence.

If I COULD start all over, with knowledge gained from what I have now...

I'd go with the Sound Choice Bricks and Foundations 1 and 2.

And I'd go digital from the beginning!

Twitch???

Lucky for me my gf enjoys running the show with me (so it would seem for now) so maybe I won't develop this "twitch." We'll see though as I begin to empty my already empty wallet into this industry we call karaoke.

I would go with better quality pro equipment than what I have now (mixers, processors, crossovers, amps, etc). More power (cleaner sound at regular listening levels & better headroom) & tri-amped (possibly quad-amped), better speakers either JBL or McCauley for the mains & monitors with single & dual 18" subs for various rooms, van (box van possibly) with a lift for transport. Add in a lighting system & possibly a portable stage set up for places that could accomodate one.

I would buy my components seperately instead of just taking the package deal off the internet. I love the CAVS unit, but the rest of the stuff I got....

Mackie SWA1801's

or

B-52's ACT-18 & ACT-18S

or

B-52's LX-18A & LX-18

Salesman tells me to go with Mackies (B-52's are less expensive) But most of the reviews I've read say the B-52's are better than the Mackie 1801's.

Any input on this, anyone?

I'm going to put a poll on the discussion forum and see what happens.

Where & who did the reviews?? There were a couple I read from B-52 & their parent company praising their stuff over Mackie.

I've also been talking to guys who work in a few of the stores here in Central Texas who've had the opportunity to compare the two side by side and they say they are both near even. Then I have to consider $2,400 for a pair of Mackie SWA1801's with $1500 for a pair of B-52's. I will keep looking for more reviews though. Thank you for making me question the sources of info though.

Mackie would still be my first choice, but from those reviews alone, it sounds like a pretty decent sub - the Act 18. They didn't do much mention on the other.
Do you have the chance to listen to them side by side? This would be your best bet. If they are that close in sound in person, i'd definately go with the ACT 18. I haven't heard B-52 in a couple years, didn't care for them then but haven't given them a chance since. They used to be geared more for DJ use. Hell even Cerwin Vega came out with a "pro" live sound system this year that ISN'T desinged for DJ that i'd like to give a listen to.

I've been wanting to hear the new CW's as well. Unfortunately, I'd have to drive to Cali it seems to listen to them. Nobody around Central Texas carries them anymore. Which leads me to think maybe that's not such a bad thing. They've changed management three times now, so who knows what's in their future. I'd hate to blow a $1,000 speaker two or three years from now only to find out the replacement parts are discontinued.

I would have backed up all my music from the start. Everything else is sweet.

Well if that did ever happen, you could always replace parts with JBL or McCauley?!?!?

If I could start all over?.... What I want doesn't exhist or does it?

I like the "promises" of my vocopro KJ7000 mixer . I want a rackable mixer with quality onboard effects (that work and work good) . I like the idea of multiple video sources and multiple channels. I love the crossfader on the mixer as I DJ sometimes. I would want a dual RACKMOUNTED CDG player with all normal bells and whistles needed to KJ and also DJ parties and such NO club dJing for me (thats an art in itself). I want my mixer my player all in a sturdy mixer case so all I have to do is plug in my amp and wired mics and GO . If I could start over I might even consider POWERED SPEAKERS like Mackie or JBL making an easier set up and tear down without sacraficing sound or quality.

If I could start over I would do a few things different, BUt for know I guess I have to start over ONE PIECE of equipment at a time

I like the idea of having everything in a single mixer case as well. Just plug up and go. Then after the show, simply unplug and go.

Only one thing. A road crew of beautiful bikini babes.
