so does anybody have any mp3s of themselves or their regulars singing??

I just got my disc from a guy that brought in a beautiful digital workstation into a private gig, and recorded us for a birthday party. While my voice was shot... from the cold/flu season and singing at the sat night gig the night before, I still managed to get recorded...

One of our Recording partners has a Roland digital "portable" workstation and it records so well live you'd almost swear sometimes you were actually in studio for part of it doing it in one single take without editing it, and could easily overdub the "bad" parts later to fix it. but really now? who would wanna do that to a great live recording?

one reason I'm posting this is I'm looking to do this myself. I'd LOVE to get that big workstation, just don't wanna spend $1600 to record singers! !

I've been looking into smaller ones...

does anybody have any good recommendations for something like this, on a budgetary scale?

I was thinking of the Boss BR532... I've seen some with a 100MB Zip drive in it...

But I also heard the Frequency that recorded .wav files was less than desirable.

So the question is... What would you guys recommend for recording seperate tracks... music on one and vocals on another?

And Morten, I don't have any knowledge of how to edit song files... so the 3MB limit is a problem... nor do I want to pay that kind of money to be at a 5MB limit...

Do you know any studio engineers that you can get really close to in your area?

Second... there is programs around in that you can do live PC recording on laptops and PC's.. but again we are talking licensing issues.

Most of those better programs come in at around $400.00 retail to $600.00 on up.

Well most items like that run anywhere from as far as Multi-track workstations start out at retail at $1,200.00 on up to $5K.
unless you wanna record with a less expensive stand alone 4 track work station at the show and take them home and dump the tracks into a PC program such as cakewalk's sonar or a lower end version of pro tools and mix them later and do what you want another time.

I use A Tascam 788 digital Portastudio. with a SCSI burner
it has 8 tracks, 7.5GB hard drive=about 3hrs recording time.
it can be used as a submixer, mixer,has 2 multi-effect sends
and a dynamic processer with compression. And some really
intuitive editing tools like cut, paste, copy, clone. It fits in a briefcase.
I just use the out from mixer to it.16 bit or 24 bit at 44.1khz sampling
rate. Full mastering.Disc at once or song at once.
I Just set it up to record push record and bring it home to add
effects, edit and master to CD. I am in no way connected to
Tascam. I just really like the christmas present from my lovely wife!
I think you can get it with CDR/CD-RW SCSI drive for around $800.
Any SCSI drive will work with it Iomega,Jaz,Zip...
I just use it for fun..It is fun to hear how we sound at a show!

After not getting any constructive feedback on this (until today! !), I went ahead and got the Boss 10-track with cd/burner... the 1180.


I'm probably gonna need a LOT of time to figure this monster out! !

Sure looks fun, though!

it wasn't meant to sound bad.. it was meant to be encouraging..

Also I was tipped off to a new tool today in the .wav file format for recording platforms it has a 30 day demo in 8 tracks of a work station for your PC.. it does alot for what it does.. I'm not gonna mention what it all does because it's so slick that it actually is a pro set up all in one.. it comes as a 30 day trial you will need an MP3 converter .. but.. e-mail me and I will tell you where to get it It's called "Melodyne", but it is very high end pro recording but is a full working demo for 30 days free. and I found it real easy to use.. and comes with downloadable Mpeg's for instruction and all.. I did 2 audio track conversions with track pitch adjustments on it.. WHAT A TOOL!! If ANYBODY!! does recording and I'm preaching to the manufacturers that lurk on here too!! this is your baby!!

I use the boss 532 and it does a good job. also it has optical out to record to cd with. thats the way I do it.

for anybody that's interested, I've been seeing them on ebay starting around $200.00!! Not that they FINISH there, but I was going to get one of those, until this opportunity came along for the 1180!

I got the latter at a terrific price on guitartrader.com!
