I've got the GTD audio 4 mic wireless set, which works well enough, but you really have to get right on top of the mic to get good sound from them. It's to the point that even putting wind screens on the mics makes you too far away.

It's this one:

It's such an issue that I'll usually give good singers a wired sm58.

Another thing I was thinking was to just replace the mic heads (if that's the word) with something high quality, since everything else about those mics works great. Is that possible?

Or Any suggestions for a wireless mic set with a better coverage range? For ease of setup and mixing I greatly prefer these 4 mic setups, as opposed to 4 completely independent wireless mics.

Sounds like the sensitivity setting on the mics are set too low. I would open up the mics and look to see if you have a screw marked gain or sensitivity. Turn that until you get the volume you want without having to eat the mics. If that's not 3, look at your mixer and adjust the gain knob which is different from the volume level knob or slider. The gain knob is usually at the top of the channel on your mixer provided you are using a pro mixer and not some home karaoke mixer/amp.

I can certainly turn the gain up, but the problem is that the "fall off" is too fast. Sounds great with someone eating it, but an inch or two away and nothing. That's not the case with sm58s for example.

It's not a gain thing, it's a mic coverage issue.

In that case If the mics don't have any way of adjustment of their sensitivity then you need to replace them because that sounds like the problem from what you are describing. No real professional mic system should be doing what it's doing. There should always be a fix for that situation.

Agreed! Which is why I'm asking about replacement options.

Wondering if anyone knows of a good 4 mic wireless setup that we should consider, that doesn't suffer from this problem.

The most number of mics in a system that I have ever used have been dual mic setups. I am running four mics using 2 dual mic systems. Easier replace a dual mic system than a four if one mic goes down.

I'm really enjoying having a 4 mic setup, so would prefer something like that if available.

This one for example looks interesting and within my budget (which is ideally under $500):

Or I'd love to be able to just change the heads (or "cartridge") on the mics I have, since they do a great job otherwise. I wonder if something like this cartridge for an SM58 would work?

It's pricey, but if it gave me a full-on SM58, would probably be worth it to upgrade a couple of my mics. I don't know if there would be impedance issues or anything like that tho.

That's the same brand (GTD) as the one I have that requires people to "eat the mic". I wonder if the cartridges are different on that model?

On mine if I move away from the mic even an inch the sound *greatly* decreases. Compare to an SM58 for example, which decreases much less.

When I ran my GTD Audio mics 622 and 737 series, they were no different than my SM58 mics (both wireless & wired) as far as proximity. If the singer pulled it away more than an inch or two, I had to adjust and turn up the board to compensate.

Hmm interesting. The "fall off" with my GTD mics is much much much faster than with my SM58's. I wish there was some way to tell if those other models are different without buying them. The ones I have are barely usable because of it. They're fine until you compare with an SM58, and then you see how bad they really are. They're good enough to give to people who can't really sing, but not to people who are used to good mics.

LOL, yeah it's pretty textbook, pull the mic, adjust the board. :wink: Try to get the singer to sing closer to the mic.

Well I didn't realize first you are using the VHF set - just looked at the link, which is the cheapest of all GTD sets so yes those mics might be different than the UHF sets (622/737/787).
This one Paradigm linked to may be the same brand but is a better system than the VHF set

For the environment we are in, "eating" the mic is not an accident. There are plenty of mics that are designed this way so that they don't pick up noise around, or in the close proximity of, the singer. Most of us do not use floor monitors where we know the mic won't be pointed at a speaker most of the time, but in an environment where the main speakers are behind the singer.

If you have a mic that is too "open" then it tends to squeal, ring, feedback and pass through a lot of frequencies you don't want and you end up riding the mixer like little monkey-jockey on the back of a greyhound.

I greatly prefer the pickup pattern of an sm58 for example. The falloff is much too fast with these GTD mics. Maybe just my model.

I've found that the capsules on the GTD 787H handhelds all sound different. Their sound is not consistent. Some have great bass response, others sound tinny...

I have found on my 737's that the capsule sometimes will work it's way up under the wind screen giving a tinny sound, when I unscrew the windscreen and push it back down, it will give it's full sound again. Might be the same on some of the 787;s

At one of my venues (where the equipment remains), I use the GTD Audio G-787H UHF.

One issue that I have is often one or two mics will sound distorted. I have adjusted the gain but still have issues.
