Just had a long conversation with another KJ in town who says he pays an mIRC channel to download any and all karaoke music he wants and that it's all perfectly legal. Been doing it for years! And he feels he's completely covered because the venues he works in pay their BMI/ASCAP fees.

I had never heard of mIRC channels so I asked if it's legal. He said "Of course it’s legal. I signed up on this program 15 years ago. I get zips and MP3’s thru there. It’s basically a worldwide forum of KJ’s that search and share. Ya have to follow their strict guidelines, but it works, and I love it. If it exists, I can get it! If it doesn’t, I can sometimes make ‘em myself."

He offered to get me anything I wanted for $1 per song. He actually thinks the fees he pays to the channel pays the artists back. Is he right?

Another quote, "Also, what makes most karaoke songs easy to get, is they are recorded with a slightly different pitch or key or tempo, etc... so it’s not up to the artists what songs of theirs is available to be made karaoke..."

When I mentioned the mechanical license as the reason why not every song can be made for karaoke because this license is denied he said, "Yes, “mechanical”. So a karaoke song can be slightly altered to pass by without being in any violation."

Finally, his background, "I know how rights work. I worked in radio for 20 years, produced commercials, sang jingles. I'm not making money off the artists lyrics on the screen, I’m making money as an independent contractor providing a service. I pay fees, I pay taxes, and the bars I play at pay ascap/BMI."

Thoughts?

More fake news.. iRC is simply another method to steal media.
Anyone stupid enough to pay a third party on iRC, deserves to loose all their cash.
I'm just sayin'

That's what I thought. I was so taken aback by his lack of knowledge and that he thinks he's not hurting anyone. Someone who has been in the radio biz and now working at the local TV station. You'd think he would know better.

Ummm... I believe it is actually the "karaoke tax" and/or the iRC compensatory fund....
and lucky for you....
I'm the only payment center....

Send it in anytime... (before the holidays)

He's basically saying if anyone believes MIRC channels are legal to download their music (which they aren't), you may as well send him the money too.

Hahaha! Well, this guy who thinks he knows so much said he's been paying to be on this channel for 15 years. I guess you just can't reason with ignorance.

Wow... if this guy really believes that he is legal with downloading from a mirc channel, he is incredibly naive. These are the same types of people who think they have won the Australian lottery never having bought a ticket....

I just bought a brand new Tesla Roadster for $500. The guy gave me a receipt on official letterhead, so it's legit. By odd coincidence, the trunk was also full of burned SoundChoice CDGs. Bonus! Remember, I have a receipt, so fully legit.

As you can tell, your buddy is a straight up thief. Just because you are ignorant doesn't make it any less breaking the law. mIRC is very well known as the primary digital black market, and I would be shocked if he was not aware of this.

Ask him if he thinks buying 30 pounds of weed online straight from Columbia is legal just because he has his Florida medical marijuana card. It's about the same thing.

You can't even make this (@$%&#!) up if you tried!!! Recorded in a different pitch? Yikes! Can we remove these people from the gene pool, or at the very least have them neutered?

And on the off chance the fool in question actually believed what he was saying, I'd get a real laugh out of knowing how much he paid this site over all those years. Actually it must be the seller who's doing the laughing, as the seller owns nothing to sell but is accepting money for it anyway.

Well if this works, I think I should go into business. I could sell da Vinci paintings online in a convenient downloadable format. Just pay me $50 via paypal, and I'll e-mail you an attachment with your choice of Mona Lisa or The Last Supper. For da Vinci that's so cheap!

Unfortunately it looks like mIRC and the torrents are impossible (or at least as far as I can tell) to catch. Heck we can't even catch BKD and they are pretty much out in the open. Of course finding out who they really are is the trick. I have to admit that they are pretty clever in that regard.

took me less then a minute to figure out who is buykaraokedownload

so I did the whois search on buykaraokedownload here is result:

Without any searching, I can ad these few bits.
1) The domain is registered by "Network Solutions", the "Original" registrar prior to allowing others to join in the fun.
2) the webmail "abuse@web.com" indicates that Network Solutions is owned by web.com.
3) web.com is owned by William E. Bloomfield. (WEB get it)
4) Bill wanted to be in congress, but so far has not made the cut.
5) Bill has more money than you and I combined.
Back to your regular programming..

You can thank Bill Clinton for making the mIRC's private and untouchable. Specifically, code 431.322.12 of the Internet Privacy Act signed by Bill Clinton in 1995.

Very funny. Actually, I have never posessed IRC software and I really have only a minimal understanding of how it works.

If you really want to talk to an expert about mIRC, torrents or the dark web, you'd have to ask Chris Avis.... He apparently has LOTS of experience with file sharing.
