Post subject:  Online use of karaoke tracks

An online karaoke site I use has now added a feature that allows upload of audio tracks, and then entering of lyrics to sync with the track. This could be used for producing original songs with scrolling lyrics of course, but they have not suggested it's limited to that. They said you can upload anything you "lawfully acquired".

So if I have a karaoke track is it really legal to do that? Not from my understanding...

For commericial use? Probably not.

Stellar Records tried to release music only versions and had software that would do the exact same thing automatically and they got sued out of existence.

Which is stupid in my opinion, but there you are

Boom.

I have been waiting for this and I "just knew" it would eventually happen. *THIS* is the real danger to karaoke producers now - crazy easy production of reasonable quality karaoke videos by everyday people. While the site in question is not exactly that, it is actually pr easy to create karaoke videos using tools that have been around for 20 years. No, not Karaoke Builder or any other toll anyone has produced. I am talking about tools that most would never think about using for karaoke production.

Have a Plan B folks......and a Plan C!

Creating graphics for a karaoke track is easy and getting easier, but it still has to start with a quality backing track if you want a quality result.

If they are not charging an outrageous price to cover the licensing they would require to legally perform the service for you, or if they are not requiring proof of your licensing, then I can't imagine they are operating within the confines of the law.
I would like to see the site for myself. Care to name it?

This is not a Sound Choice specific issue, or to any karaoke manufacturer in particular.

Smoothe, KNF exposed, in this thread, that SingSnap was using SC files in the recordings of their members. Those replies are now missing, as well as James' reply. :?

Here's an overview of what's going on:

1) Users upload their "legally purchased" karaoke audio tracks.
2) They enter and sync lyrics with a tool provided by the site (no original CDG graphics).
3) They are able to record the songs for anyone to listen to online. Also any other paid user can use the tracks uploaded by any other users.

Site says this is somehow legal under Canadian "fair use" law.

Legal or no?

The short answer.....NO!

Ditto that NO!

Rights to that "legally purchased background track" belong to somebody. Republishing it online (or anywhere outside the home) is an infringement.
