‘KAPA UK work alongside the 5 main backing track and Karaoke manufacturers in the UK, to protect and prevent the acquisition and use of illegal backing tracks.’

I reached out to KAPA to ask about efforts to bring this to the states.
I have forwarded on to SC/PEP/Kurt Slep to inquire about efforts to collaborate.

Was just going to post this. Here is their FB page too, looks like it might have been initiated by Zoom karaoke but not sure.

SC had the original KAPA here, along with the original SPIN (stop piracy internationally now) program which was the first attempt. Then KIAA. But I wouldn't be surprised to see the US collaboration of KAPA come back now that the UK manus are actually on board this time. I would actually join it this time since it's more than just the 1 manu.

I would also join this. I believe they will do it right.

Two of the key points that I picked up from their website is:

1. They will go into venues to talk to owners about piracy.
2. They will encourage venues to only hire KJ's that posses a KAPA membership card.

Love it.

3. (quote from their website) “Any users who has been, knowingly or unknowingly, using illegally acquired karaoke/backing tracks will be invited to discuss the source and provenance of their content / catalogue. They will then be offered the opportunity/option of making a one-off reasonable settlement payment to KAPA UK and the karaoke manufacturers in order to avoid legal action”.

Not the other way around. An “investigator” assuming I’m a pirate because I’m pc based host & be named in a lawsuit. I like kapauk approach of “let’s talk” first. Count me in. I’ll join too!

But that would take all the "nail biting" out it. What fun would that be

It's only for the UK. I posed the question if we would be part of it, to Zoom's FB page, where I saw the announcement. I was told that it is JUST for the UK.

That's too bad. I'm sure that most of us would join in a heartbeat.

For now. They've already stated in other places that it's not out of the question that they move this program to the US as well.

I emailed them and received a response -

My email to them -

"Good Day!

I am a strong supporter of “legal” karaoke here in the U.S. I have worked the now defunct Chartbusters and Stellar Records (Pop Hits Monthly and other brands) in their certification programs. I am also involved with the Sound Choice/Phoenix Entertainment Partners (PEP) certification program.

I also buy a lot of tracks through the UK producers as well as through KaraokeVersion.com

Does your program only apply to the UK? Will it be expanded to the US? If so, when and how can I get involved? I would enjoy speaking to someone about helping promote the program in the US."

Their response -

"Good afternoon Chris,

Firstly we would like to say we at KAPA UK think the support for the industry from yourself is admirable. Currently we are only tackling the UK, however ‘never say never’ may apply. I will most certainly keep you details and contact you primarily if such a venture is ever considered. At this moment we represent five manufactures listed on our website, this does not include karaoke version. If this ever changes, I will again let you know."

So, for now, this is nothing that we have to deal with. Good. We have enough Karaoke Police with SC, we don't need more.

I disagree, this is exactly what is needed - ALL the manus jumping on board collectively and not just 1 or two.

Not if it is going to cost us money. I don't want or need the Karaoke Police charging me anything.

And how do you propose they fund their operations?

Don't care. Not my problem. I pay for my music. I pay for me equipment. I pay my taxes. That is quite enough, thank you.

It is your problem. You are just let your ignorance stand in the way of realizing it.

Chris, it is NOT my problem. I am a single rigger, without a ton of resources like you have. I will not pay some BS fee to have people watch over me.

Their approach does seem to be accommodating.

They apparently will have a conversation with you before determining whether action is needed.

I would like to understand their authority.

Will they become another of the alphabet soups? (focused specifically on the karaoke industry)

I pay for my car, my gas, my taxes, and my insurance. That's quite enough, I don't need the traffic police charging me.

And they WON'T if you do nothing wrong. From what I understand, to be a member of KAPA, there is a fee. NO THANKS.
