I've been running my own shows since 1991, and through all those years, I bought just under 200 Sound Choice disks, plus several hundred from other manufactures. It seems to me that this special offer from Sound Choice is a pretty good deal. Does anyone know if the SC offer is for disk operators too?

SC says the pirates mentioned in these various lawsuits can buy the entire catalog of SC disks for less than a dollar a song. I figure with two Foundations, five Bricks, almost 1 thousand Spotlights, the Latino Series, Kids Series, the Reminising Series, and who know what else, that's a lot of disks. Does anyone know if the SC offer includes all of this,.... and can disk operators take advantage of it too?

I have talked to Sound Choice about this and they are supposed to get back to me next week.

I assume the 1 dollar would be a fine, and they are probably not allowed to keep the songs after once they are caught.

The 1 dollar/song would be for PAST possesion.

Otherwise we would have the problem that some of the songs that SC may be sueing about SOUNDCHOICE no longer has the rights for (like the Eagles songs).

So they can't give permission for the ownership of (new copies) of those songs. I assume that they probably have already settled for their liablity on old copies made of those songs.

I'm not so sure they (pirates) would be required to get rid of their libraries after paying SC the pre-trial settlement. I haven't read all of these threads very thoroughly (and I don't have the time or patience to start scouring all of the other sites for their talk about it), but I don't recall seeing anything that CLEARLY STATES "Once caught, you will be offered a settlement fee/fine/whatever, and then you will have to delete all of your files."

After all, A Spotlight disc (containing 15 songs) now costs about $24 (and you can even find them cheaper now from some of the ONLINE vendors that offer up sales (I've seen some sales where they were offered at about $15)). With that in mind, if we're talking about owning 10,000 songs that are all SC, and the fine is $10,000 to settle before going to Court, in effect, the KJ has now paid for the ownership of that set of songs. Now, how many of you have $10,000 laying around to buy all of those songs on a single purchase??? Call it copyright infringement or whatever else you want to, but that's how I see it.

ODJT has both public and private forums. It's possible the threads in question were moved to members only forums, and closed to the public. However, I don't know how that would show in a search, and I'm just guessing here. I have yet to go there today....

The linked worked when I posted it.

I should have been more specific than just to give you a link to all of SC's postings.

It appears when new posts are made, a new link is created to show all of the members postings.

Here is a specifc post by SC regarding mp3g's for around $0.75 a song. Look to the 5th paragraph which begins, "Prices for the sets will be less than $0.75 per song with some discounts for multiple purchases" - Then you can search around for the other posts where Kurt expounds further on selling the mp3g sets on disc w/o duplicates.

http://www.ourdjtalk.com/showthread.php ... post325918

Sorry if there was any confusion.

Maybe this answers the OP's question. It is a quote taken from a news article about the Sound Choice lawsuits filed in North Carolina.

He said defendants will be given a chance to settle, which will require them to buy a legitimate set of Slep-Tone CD+Gs at a cost of $6,500.

“It’s not about putting KJs out of business, but stopping them from using pirated music to run their shows,” Harrington said. “Once they become legal through the settlement procedures we’ve established, which also provides them with a set of legitimately licensed CD+Gs to use, they’re in the clear.”

Are you saying the he said that one can buy a complete set of SC discs for
$6,500????

I read an article that says they have 18,000 in their song catalog if the above
price is right that makes it about .37 cents a song.

Where do I sign up???

My question would be..., is that 18k catalog as the songs exist on CD+G discs, or individual songs? If it is discs then there may be the issue of duplicates which then increases the price per song. And, if duplication we're eliminated, how many individual songs have they actually produced?

I got off the phone a little while ago with Sound Choice customer service.

The special package that they offer to KJ's that want to buy "everything":

Both Foundations
All Bricks
and 240 Spotlights

Coming out to roughly 4710 songs and 314 CDGs.

If you buy one set they charge 71 cents a song, so that makes it about:

$3,344 plus shipping...

I'm pretty sure they give you a bigger price break if you want more than one set!

I unfortunately didn't ask if they have a listing somewhere of the Spotlights that are included. I may have to call back later.

Well apparently first off you have to be a pirate, then you have to be investigated and served by Sound Choice AND then you settle for the $6500 and a complete set of their discs and thier blessing as a now legit KJ.

Ok, Ok you know I'm just kidding!

jr,

Here's the post where Kurt mentions "No Duplicates".

http://www.ourdjtalk.com/showthread.php ... post326162

As I re-read it, SC is going to combine a mp3+g product for the general public which has yet to be produced.

Not quite the answer for the OP.

Thank you SC for thinking outside the CDG case on your future plans. I'm working on my top 500 (or so) songs and going to submit it. Slep's post on SC's future plans is one that I'd like to see replicated in the open forums here!!!!! There's hope yet!!!!

I think Sound Choice just does not get it, like Ipod did not really understand with their version of song sales initially, that had copy protection etc.

I pod had a great system, but their copyright protection was a nightmare. Whenever I was charging my ipod on my laptop, I had to make sure I had internet connection otherwise my legally purchased Itunes songs would be "decertified" on my ipod.

If sound choice tries to sell some version of downloadable karaoke songs that only work with some special system (like the Dopi karaoke they did before) few serious KJs will switch format to their system. Especialy if the songs need to be verified on the internet to be used. Enough of my gigs DO NOT have internet connection. A lot of them are at private homes or even at parks where internet is going to be difficult or even impossible. Without regular internet verification there is no real way to make the songs copy proof.

Finally I cant see myself spending a lot of mony on copy proof songs anymore. I have had hard drives fail in the past. Backups are essential. If SC develops some legal CAVS like system that works on a HD then it is too much money invested in a single device that will eventually fail.

The request for 7500 best songs probably will be for some portable read only device that will work independently. But any serious KJ would not want to limit themselves only to that list. Mixing two or more formats and devices in a karaoke show is not an inconvenience that many of us will want to do. ESPECIALY if that device can not be updated with new songs or songs by other companies.

MP3+G are the industry standard, and that standard is not going to change even for sound choice. Especially if the only change is going to be a protection system.

Sound choice may introduce some downloads on a private format, see very limited sales and then 2-4 years later switch to MP3+G.
