As funny as that is, there is a lot of truth to it.

It has been said "the truth will set you free", let us hope that all of us are on the road to more personal freedom, not less.

Well it looks like the worm has finally turned. Mitch McConnell is really good about not wanting to overturn the traditions of the Senate, that is as long as it works to his advantage. Mitch is only concerned with process when he is in a weaken position, when he holds the power he uses it. Evidently Chuck Schumer has learned a lesson. Concerning the filibuster Mitch wants to keep the rule, so he can derail any legislation the Democrats might want to pass. Chuck made it clear that keeping the filibuster in it's present form is unacceptable, and that it won't be accepted, good for him. He is finally realizing that the only thing Mitch respects is power, you can't give the power away or Mitch will use it against you. This means a simple majority will decide such issues as infrastructure, pandemic stimulus, immigration, so that those executive orders will finally become law.

The Democrats have been given the mandate, and no matter how slim, if they don't use it, guess what they will lose the next election cycle. So far we have seen what the Republicans can do, it is time to see what the Democrats can, then we can make a choice in four years based on accomplishments. How well the two systems deliver for the voters, and which system will prevail in the polls. If we don't do it this way with the wide divide, then we will split apart as a country. At least both sides will get a fair shot at pulling the levers of government. Already Biden has hit the ground running, and is doing everything possible to combat the problems facing this nation, not heading to the golf course, or watching Fox News all day. Who knows we might even get some action on UBI? For those who say legislation shouldn't happen unless it is bipartisan, remember the tax cuts for the rich were voted in without one Democrat vote for that law.

P.S. Chuck also announced that the impeachment trial will be begin on Feb 9th. This time with all of the evidence will be heard, and both sides will be able to present their cases. Finally a return to the rule of law.

Mitch McConnell backed down on his demand to promise to keep the filibuster in it's current form. Now the business of the Senate can move forward. For a time we will see if compromise will work in that body. There are 16 Senators in the middle 8 Democrats and 8 Republicans that can provide the votes needed to pass legislation. Let us hope the country can move forward, and that we can govern effectively. That the badly needed reforms will be passed, and that working families will finally have there place at the table, and share with the elites the bounty that this country creates.

It seems that 34 mayors of some of the biggest cities both Red and Blue States have come out in favor of extending direct payments to citizens for the duration of the pandemic. They want $2,000 checks going out every month, the country it impacted by the virus. This is supported by legislation already put forward, and only needs to be voted on by the Senate. Maybe it should be rolled into the reconciliation bill, that looks like the only way any thing is going to get done. That is going to be one large piece of legislation, since it will also increase the minimum wage to $15.00 an hour as well.

Now we have a new proposal not pushed by a Democrat but rather by a Republican. Mitt Romney wants to pay a monthly allowance to parents of children from before actual birth until the child is 18. For smaller children under the age of 6 it would be 350.00 a month, for those over 6 it would be 250.00 a month. Little by little we are coming around to the idea that child poverty needs to be addressed in this country. We are one of the few developed nations of the world that doesn't help with the cost of parents raising a family. For a country that is supposed to support family values, this is strange indeed. For those who insist that all life is precious, and that there should be no abortions, it makes perfect sense to help parents pay for children, they say have to have the right to live.

Slowly but surely with this, UBI, a 15.00 a hour minimum wage, and food security, we are coming to the point where there has to be help extended to working families. That we cannot have 11% of the population controlling 73% of the wealth of this country. That there has to be a change, in order to keep things from spiraling out of control, making this country ungovernable. Trump talked about the forgotten men and women, now it is time to remember them and their children.

After much discussion it seems the increase of the Federal Minimum Wage from 7.25 an hour will have to wait. It has not increased since 2007 and those working for that starvation wage, have seen their purchasing power decline over that 14 year period. When polled is was found out the richer you are the less inclined you are to raise the minimum wage, surprise, surprise, not! Even in a state like West Virginia the minimum wage is 11.00 an hour. I don't see how some states can justify keeping is super low, when a state like West Virginia is higher, by 3.75 an hour?

It seems like Biden will have to separate the raising of the minimum wage from the stimulus package to get it passed. It would seem even Senators like Joe Manchin can get behind 11.00 and hour. If that is the floor then why not start there, and increase yearly until it reaches 15.00 an hour? If it is this difficult just to get more money if you are working, how much harder will it be to get UBI, where you are compensated for not working?

Both California and Maryland will have their own version of direct payments going to citizens for 600.00 and 300.00 respectively. So now states are also jumping on the direct payment band wagon.

During this week the Senate will vote on the 1.9 trillion dollar stimulus package. About 75% of the voters support the new package, even though it is not popular in the beltway. Trump did support 2,000.00 per person checks during the last part of his presidency. Seems funny that the Republicans supported also, until it became a bill pushed by the Democrats. The country is behind Democratic policies, even if the GOP isn't. Now is the time for the Democrats to use their majority no matter how thin to pass their agenda. The lack of action will cost them in the next election cycle. This is the time to get rid of the 60 vote rule in the Senate, and using the majority to pass legislation.

The GOP has become a party of obstruction, it is time to move forward. I'm sure if UBI were pushed it would have the majority of voters supporting it.
