I have a rule on repeats, the original singer has to either say no problem, I have to hear it straight from them, or they have to have left the building for good for me to allow it.

No repeats period.

When someone asks for a song that has already been done, I tell them that the song has already been sung, please choose another.

You have plenty of time and plenty of choices. No song gets done twice in one show.

The life saved may be yours.

Actually the only times that I have allowed repeats, it's been the original singer requesting it because the person who it was meant for wasn't present for the first time and they really only did the first time as a practice run. But usually I am able to convince them to sing something else. If I get requests for the same song in the same rotation, it goes to the first one who put it in and they have to sing it in that rotation, which may mean my having to switch the song that they may have given me out of the order that they gave it to me and usually it's not a problem with the first requester. Sometimes though the person who put up first doesn't want to sing it that early and will tell me to let the other person sing it.

I've always expected it would be a third party listener who would snap after tolerating the same song previously. After all, there are more listeners than singers and I usually play the odds in favor.

Taking that into consideration, yeah, no repeats; the chances are as good as the number of people in the room that someone loses their composure over it.

Actually there was a time when I wanted to throttle the host. My ex-wife and I went to a show and she put in a song with the request for the host to sing with her and he came back and said that the song was already in by someone else. It got done later by a girl who wasn't even in the bar when my ex-wife put the song in. I don't reserve songs for anyone and nobody at my shows has ownership on any songs. Whomever puts it in first is who gets to sing it.

No she wasn't the problem, the host was.

I wonder what song is was. Perhaps My Way by Sinatra, the song has a history of karaoke violence.

Haven't heard that song in so long - done 10 times total last year maybe 1 time on the night I worked.

I have adopted a new policy for accepting requests. The ONLY way that I accept requests is to talk to me face to face when I have my phone in hand. I will gladly tell you whether or not I have the song. If I don't have it, I will open up my notepad on my phone and not down the artist, title and your name and ask for a second song from the songlist so if the song that they asked for is available for download I have time to buy, download, rename it and import it into my database before selecting it for you. Otherwise I just put in the song and submit it. One rule though, the requester has to be the singer. If I see someone approaching me that isn't who I talked to when getting the request, the song gets 86ed and I refuse to take any more requests from you even if it is for you.

If you’re a tourist visiting the Philippines (my hometown, born and raised in Manila), singing “My Way” by Sinatra can get you killed.
