In my town, literally 10-12 karaoke shows to choose from in a 15 mile radius any given week night, and 50-60 shows on Friday and Saturday nights, and the vast majority of them are pretty full.

Since I've retired as a KJ, I've been regularly attending a show at a small VFW. 1500 SF max, just a bar with about 16 seats and four tables that each sit 6, so the max capacity is about 40 people, and always standing room only for karaoke night with about 30-40 supportive patrons and a reasonable rotation of about 12-20 most nights.

That's pretty typical at most venues around town. Some dead nights, some super busy nights, but almost everyone of the 50-60 venues are averaging a 12-20 person rotation pretty consistently with 2-4X that many total patrons.

So at least around here, karaoke is still every bit as viable as live music, and still cheaper for the venue owner, so unless you think live music is dead, karaoke is doing just fine.

Which, BTW, lower wages for KJs has nothing to do with the industry dying. It is the natural sign of a maturing market. High consumer demand + low number of hosts = big wages. Once the market matures, demand and labor (hosts) balance out into a true market value. That's where we are.
