As I've posted from time to time, I have been known to refurbish/repair computers.
So one of my very old customers calls, and says he needs some love.
It's been quite a while since he's been over, but OK, come on down..

The issue is, not reading the external drive. (Sometimes)

He drops the system and HD off, and I plug it in, boot it up, and what a cluster..

An old HP core 2 duo, running XP, and has not been updated ever.
The external drive is reading OK for me, so I'm not sure what his problem is.

I check his drive on my tower, and it's again, OK. Hmmm.

Checking the USB cable, I see that it's beyond worn. Yes, the actual USB connections has been pushed in and out so often, the metal is worn almost away.
Not seen that before..

Checking the HP, yes, the USB connection is also worn..

I call him, relay the info, and suggest he bring his back up.. (That's a funny)

He buys a new external, and asks if I can put his data on the new one.

Holy Eff, he has no idea how long that can take on USB 2.0.

I suggest he pick another laptop to complete the change over.

So I make a sale, and start to copy the drive..

Using my HP i7 tower with USB 3.0 (Much faster)

Well no good deed goes unpunished..
His drive (1TB) is corrupted with 1/3 of his data unreadable. EFF!

Turns out, his computer knowledge is minimal, and he has a folder that was copied three times on his external drive. (Yes, the same data 3X)
So, not as much data lost as I suspected..

So, the moral of this story is, "Back Up" yore data.
Don't use Windows XP, and keep yore laptop clean and in good shape.

He now has a very nice late model HP and some of his ripped data.
And no, I'm not going to re-rip his discs..
