Hello, all. Several months ago I decided to create a solo act and sing at nursing homes and senior centers. Retired, the frustrated singer in me wanted out and the typical karaoke bar filled with 30 somethings has no interest in hearing Johnny Mathis. I bought a sound system and a lap top and Siglos program. During this time, I was on here often begging for advice and Paradigm patiently got me through so much. (Anyone who goes through Arizona, please attend his show.) I bought a Karaokeinfo program and downloaded and learned a bunch of songs and started knocking on doors. As I was offering a free show, so booking was not a problem. I did my first show on June 19 and today did my 24th. I am learning as I go. My question today is about legality. I am being approached by people suggesting that I play at fairs and festivals and this place and that place.....places where you expect to see professionals. I don't think anyone cares much about some old guy with a karaoke outfit singing to crowds of 19 in a nursing home for no payment, but to go into a business or "real" venue, I expect I would need better and approved backing tracks. People on here know this stuff. What can you tell me? Thanks to all who respond.

I actually do senior center twice a month on average. For me it's a paid venue.

I don't give away services for free, there are expenses such as insurance (what if a senior or staff trips on a wire, are you covered for damages?), gas, time, etc..

If you plan on doing a fair, or any venue for that matter you should get paid. The board constantly tells new KJs time and time again that playing for free (or giving it away) doesn't benefit the karaoke industry, and we have enough problems.

The bottom line is if they are making money, so should you.

Yes, I know that providing any kind of "entertainment" free introduces an element of competition into the equation that hurts everyone, but that was not my question. This entire endeavor is completely outside of my comfort zone and experience, which is why I thought it best to establish some kind presence and reputation before offering myself up as a "professional." Now that I am approaching that point, should I replace my file shared Karaokeinfo tracks with others that are paid for in order to satisfy whatever agencies may be watching?

Dadman, If you want more help here, you need to pay for your music.

agreed, step one is to delete every track you got from karaokeinfo (assuming all of them are from there) and get going legally.
then you can get more help.

I am OK with deleting and rebuilding my list of about 100 songs. Can anyone recommend sources to acquire quality, legal tracks?

Guys:
16 or 17 years ago my wife and I ran karaoke shows and I used no music that had been burned. I have hundreds of discs in varying conditions, containing virtually every song I sing. Does owning these discs provide me with any legal protection? If I have to buy 100 downloads at $2 each, that is certainly not a deal breaker, but if I am already covered I would rather use that $200 elsewhere. Any thoughts?

If they are the exact same songs that are on the disc and the same manufacturer, I think that you would be covered. Otherwise you probably should go with the downloads from reputable companies like the ones that have been mentioned.

If you have the discs that match up exactly to what you have on your hard drive - you are fine - UNLESS those discs are Sound Choice & Chartbuster, then you would need to pay for the permission to transfer them to hard drive.
Otherwise download and pay for each track.
