8) A singer the other night told me that a host was able to take an audio disc and play it and some how a machine or a program added the lyrics to the screen, has anyone heard of such a device or seen one?

I'm calling BS on that. Current speech to text programs that costs thousands of dollars are just starting to convert well, and really only in very quiet environments with little background noise, so there's no way this KJ has something more advanced that's picking vocals out of music. That technology may exist, but it be very very costly today, and not readily available at a reasonable price on the consumer market.

If so, the world of karaoke would jump leaps and bounds and so would the courts.

Yes, it's for real. I've seen various forms of this. It's voice recognition software that reads ahead in the audio track so it can have the words shown before they're heard and time it to highlight words as they're sung or spoken. It was born from the software that is used to create various closed captions in videos. Not always accurate with singing and notes that are held for any length of time. Most people haven't seen it because there aren't a lot of uses for it outside of the video business. Not good for karaoke because karaoke requires no vocal track and this does. Not good for finding song lyrics, because it's not accurate and most lyrics are already available online anyway. It's a novelty, and it's only real purpose is so you can sing along with songs that already have vocal tracks.

Well, then, you'll have no problem finding a link to one of the various websites. I'll be waiting patiently.

Straight from one of the only websites I could find on the topic:

Quote:
AUTOMATIC SOUNDTRACK TRANSCRIPTION – SPEECH TECHNOLOGY IS STILL A LONG WAY FROM CONVERTING SOUNDTRACK AUDIO INTO ACCURATE TEXT IN REAL-TIME – ALTHOUGH THERE ARE SYSTEMS THAT DO COME CLOSE. THE CHALLENGES ARE MULTIPLE AND INCLUDE: SOUND EFFECTS AND BACKGROUND MUSIC, DIFFERENT VOICES AND ACCENTS AND SWITCHING BETWEEN THEM, UNEXPECTED VOCABULARY AND PUNCTUATION.

Oh, and on top of that, the product they are selling that barely does this job consists of a $1300 computer hardware card of some sort, then a separate $1600 software package.

So again, NO, you didn't see this out at various karaoke bars.

YouTube has been doing it for free for quite some time, although not perfectly. The option is in the Video Manager under Subtitles and Closed Captioning.
Here's a link to another free captioning service:
https://popuparchive.com/

With a little practice, either of these options could be managed on the fly, but I would expect quite a few errors on the lyrics.

Not really relevant to the discussion. The claim was that you can take an audio CD, put it in your player/computer, and have the lyrics appear on the screen.

At best, I suspect the KJ took the guy's audio CD, downloaded the requested song on the fly, or even maybe looked it up on YouTube, and just played the karaoke version.

8) Not so TopherM, because the singer in question asked me for songs that have no karaoke tracks developed as far as I could find out. They couldn't have been downloaded from another source since no karaoke tracks exist period.

8) I don't have the list in front of me Lonnie, but they were Merle Haggard songs, since his death I have been getting requests for his songs which have not been turned into karaoke tracks. I happen to have the Merle Haggard 90119 CB 50 songs, which has most of his hits including " Motorcycle Cowboy".

Still waiting for those various links, BTW. Are these advanced programs top secret, or do the companies that sell them actually advertise them?

Ah was just wondering, I have like 75 Haggard tracks.

The Korean version doesn't do very well

It translates "Every single I love you" to "Mention one time me love you long time"

I didn't say I've seen it for sale. As someone else mentioned, YouTube is just one area where they're using it. That kind of technology usually isn't something made for the consumer market. There are tons of high end technologies that consumers just can't access or afford. I'd love to have the software that Pixar uses to make their 3D animations, but it's not for sale. Even if it was, I couldn't afford it anyway.
