Post subject:  SX300s or JBL Eon 615?

Hallo everyone

Back again like the prodigal son as I thought I could do with your expert opinions!

Current setup:
EV SX300
QSC G5 anp
Yamaha EMX512SC mixer

Setup works perfectly for my one man show guitar + vocal, then karaoke and then some deejaying at medium sized venues.

5% of the time these venues are larger and I question whether I need a pair of 15" for more bottom end or just add on a powered sub to my existing setup.

For the record I sold my last JBL JRX 118SP because I was very worried I was going to kill my back.

So my questions are

1. How does the JBL Eon 616 compare to my existing EV setup?
2. Would I get a lot more low end?
3. The 12" EVs sound wonderful to my ear for my solo act... would the eons be much different?

Thanks all!

Vic in Sydney

I'm a little confused. You have a powered mixer and an amp? Are you bypassing the the amp section of your mixer?

The G5 is underpowering those speakers by about 17%. Not a big deal, but you will gain cleaner bass and more detail in the highs and mids if you were to upgrade the amp to something pushing the full 600 watts/ch @ 8 ohms that your speakers are designed for.

I run EV SX300s as my mains as well, and power them with a QSC PLX1804. You would notice the upgrade if you could sell the G5 (retail $400) and upgrade the PLX1804 (retail $450). If you got lucky, you might even break even on the sale and rebuy, especially of a used amp.

Of course, the JBL 615 would be an upgrade in low end. You are talking a 12" woofer that's good to about 50Hz versus a 15" woofer that's good down to about 40 Hz. Question is if that is worth the extra cash :) As stated, you would clean up that low end a bit with the amp upgrade keeping the current speakers. Just don't think you are ever going to get thunderous bass out of any 12" speaker. You are looking to tune it to more of a punchy bass sound with a long throw. My sub quit on me about 3 weeks ago, and I've been getting by fine in a 6000 SF room with just the EV SX300s.

The mids and highs of the SX300 and JBL are going to be almost identical.

Finally, as stated, not sure what you are doing with the powered mixing amp. You could sell that, buy a new mixer without an amp, and still have money leftover to start saving for a sub. A single sub with the sx300s properly powered by a 600 watt amp is exactly what I run, and it sounds sweeeeet!

Good luck!

Echo Topher. Keep the EVS. Sell the amp and mixer amp and buy an amp with proper power and a decent small mixer.

I was really hoping the 2 of you didn't say that.

Been on my mind lately but sentimental value attached to my EMX!

You are right though. This is exactly what I should do.

Thanks Topher and Lonnie!

Another reason for keeping the mixer is that I do some quieter gigs where I simply connect the EVs straight into the EMX without the need for an amp.

Saves me setup and convenience. : )

Well you could always sell it all, get a couple powered speakers EV ZRX112P are good then add a sub later & small mixer Yamaha, Allen & Heath, Mackie all have nice little boards - even more portable & will work in small rooms too.

Also not a bad way to go. And when you have your smaller gigs, just bring a single powered EV ZLX12P speaker that weighs in at a whopping 34 lbs (an SX300 is 32 lbs, without a built in amp!). That's pretty back saving!

Okay here is my next question...

I can get a pair of dbr15's sparingly used for about $1100 And sell my sx300s and gx5 for $650.

I love the sound of my evs. How does the dbr15 fare in an AB comparison?

The Yamaha DBR15s are 15" speakers powered to 1000 watts. That's going to be an improvement over the EVs. More power is pretty always going to be cleaner bass and more detail in the highs and mids.

Again, though, just depends on if you think a incremental bump in the sonic quality is worth the $450 cash you'll fork out.

Topher and Lonman - thanks so much for your thoughts and advice.

I did a side by side of the dbr15 and sx300 big difference.

I don't think it would matter too much at lower levels but as you get louder - the dbr really kicks.

I can't believe how much thump these plastic boxes produce! Thanks Yamaha!

Yep these plastic box systems - especially from quality manus like JBL, EV, QSC are specifically desiigned to sound closer to wooden box systems.
