how do you feel about it?

just got this new gig where i'm set up way over on the other side of this huge room. i'm away from everybody who's lined up at the bar. but surprisingly, i dig it. i feel so free.

it took this for me to finally see what's been partly making me so moody as a kj. setting up myself in the middle of 'the action' where folks have easy access to me and interrupting me all night long is the pits.

I had a gig once where I set up my stuff where the bands sound engineer would normally set up in the middle of the bar. Stage was all snaked in so my mics and monitors would work fine, even sent the video signal through for the on stage tv. Singers were the star, anyone submitting a song would come to me in the middle. Great set up - only downfall was when there was a shy singer, they didn't like being on stage by themselves - but that was rare, since most everyone that came in there sang with bands and musicians.

At my regular Saturday night venue, a Moose Lodge, we play two different rooms... If the banquet room is booked for a wedding reception or some other function, we play in the lounge.

The majority of my patrons prefer the banquet room because of the large dance floor and the tables/chairs on three sides. The closest table to my speakers is at least 30' away. I'm not that fond of it because it feels like I'm playing in a big empty gymnasium, even though we usually have 40+ singers.

On the other hand, the lounge provides a much more intimate atmosphere... I feel more like part of the crowd... with the closest tables a just a few steps from my console, but it only has a postage-stamp sized dance floor, and it is at the far end of the room.
