Handling professional singers at karaoke.

Being in a high traffic tourist area, I must admit we do get quite a few "Professional singers" visiting Niagara falls quite often.

But what do you do when they come to your karaoke show and want to perform?

Maybe I'm wrong but my answer is simple...
Submit your request and wait in line like the rest.

Supporting favouritism is bad in the karaoke business.

I get many 'pro'/'semi-pro' singers - they all know they wait. They like coming to my show because they know they will sound like they do at their own shows and do not expect favortism because they aren't there to 'showcase' themselves, but to have fun on a night off.

Unless a certified celebrity walks in and wants to sing, they wait just like everyone else.

DMX came to my karaoke once, and I let him on the mic right after he asked if he could do a song. The patrons won't turn down a free concert.

That's what I was referring to. Celebrities coming in from their Casino performances, then tour the town after their show.

Just the other day there was an artist showing me video clips of him opening up for Luke Bryan and performing for 7000+ audience, came in with his guitar wanting to sing and play guitar for 3 songs in a row.

Even though they "May" put on a good show or attract more people, I don't believe that other singers should be "Put aside"

He felt a little upset because the DJ said he can play and sing "One" song, but then refused because he wanted 3 songs minimum.

I could understand if someone was singing "Hotel California" and inviting celebrities like Glenn Frey to assist in singing while was in town last week... but hey... it's karaoke...

In response to Niagra, I wouldn't exactly call "the guy opening for Luke Bryan" a celebrity. At least not yet. You don't even remember his name. So he wouldn't get celebrity status at my show either. Now, if Luke Bryan rolled in...well, he's going to get as much mic time as he wants, and I'm going to his after party.

I have people come to my karaoke all the time saying they are "so and so" or played at the state fair, or won a national competition, or finished 43rd on American Idol. Who cares. Wait your turn.

In response to NoShame, DMX asked me to give him a beat, I threw on the karaoke version of Nuthin But a G Thang, and he freestyled. Crowd went nuts.

I wish I would have been at that show.

A friend of mine, who no longer lives in the area, had the lead singer of Ratt come to his show, when asked if he wanted to get up and sing, his response was only if you paid me to. So I wouldn't gripe about maybe going off the rotation for a celebrity who wants to sing. For me, it would probably be one of the only times that I might play favorites. They wouldn't have to bribe me either.

It is my general opinion that most Celebrities (whether they be actors or singers) wish to remain anonymous when they are going out in public. They usually just want to chill and enjoy their free time, not wanting to be (possibly) bothered or harassed by their "# 1 FANs."

I don't want to be at the show where Glenn Frye is getting up to sing karaoke. That is truly the karaoke show from Hell. Somebody needs to read the Obits.

That should be quite a show since he died in January of 2016. Talk about getting the band back together, holy crap, it's a resurrection of The Eagles! Literally.

If anyone is talented enough for that comeback it would be Glenn, Bernie, and Randy.
They've earned the return trip . . . After all, they've been paying Heavenly bills since 1976!

I've had DEWEY BUNNELL of the group America come to a few shows down here in SW Florida because I believe he has a home in Naples. He is very unassuming and has no entourage, etc. He never wants to be introduced as a celebrity, and patiently waits his turn. Actually, the only way I found out his identity was through a woman that was sitting with him the first time he came for karaoke. He's a great guy and has a killer voice.

A person is a person.. professional or not... they ill be treated the exact same way at my show.

That said.. I find the professional singer the hardest to mix sound for. I don't know how it is in other places, but it's typical around here to have two 12" or 15" mains for a show, pointed at the bar, so the singer can experience feedback on their mic. A pro moves their mic in a way consistent with the speakers being place in front of their stage. I find them very hard to mix,

Just had that convo last night.. I have a guy who toured all over north america who comes to my show every week. He had lots to say on the subject :)
