host. I enjoy seeing others loosen up and sing. It is a very therapeutic experience for most people. I do enjoy singing myself but if I had to choose one or the other hosting would be my choice. |

Interesting question. I have not done both, not sure anyone would pay to hear me sing. Karaoke allows someone to be a superstar, or at least live out that fantasy. I love both parts of karaoke, being able to sing and running a show that people walk off the stage happy and people are cheering for them. At this point, I ain't answering the question! |

I'm both. Love to host, love to sing. I don't' sing much at my show. I'm off rotation list when singer count reach 8. 1st round, 2nd round maybe if still less than 8. I get my karaoke singing fix by going to other karaoke venues, at home or invite some of my friends on non-karaoke nights, Sun or Wed, same venue & sing our hearts out. |

You would be surprised at how many people would pay to hear you sing..... Listen to some of your local bands for reference. I can not count how many awful sounding bands that are out there and being paid. ![]() |

I've done both. Singing in a band lead me to hosting, because I owned most of the PA equipment for the band and was looking for something to do with it when my band broke up. I was at a karaoke show when the KJ quit in the middle of the show, and I stepped in on the fly without every having done it before, just based on my abilility to run a board. I had to refine my hosting skills, but I had the technical skills already, so I was all settled in about 6-8 weeks later. I enjoyed the life of singing in a band better than being a KJ, but it's because it's less responsibility, more unadulturated fun, more late nights....all stuff I couldn't do now if I wanted to. Being a KJ has it's moments, but it is more condusive to a responsible life, especially since it's the same venue every night, same hours, same days. It's tough being in a band and needing to count on the income from that, because you never know if you're going to work 3-4 days that week or 0 days that week. Actually, at one point about 2 years into my KJ career, I was playing in a rockabily band that was starting to get a good following and consistent work at bars, car shows, and corporate events. The first 5-6 months I played with these guys, we worked around my KJ nights, but once we were starting to make a little money, they asked me to quit my KJ job so I had Saturday nights free for the band. Even though on a per-gig basis, I was making a tad bit more than my KJ gig, I had to tell the band no. I choose steady, predictable income over something I enjoyed more. 6 years later, I still have the steady KJ income, I don't think that band every found a new singer, and the individual members likely had to start the process over. Once I don't NEED the KJ income anymore, I think I'll try to get back into the live music world, but only with a casual cover band that doesn't really need the money! |

I had always thought that I would love to sing with a band. When I got the opportunity a year or so ago, I found it just wasn't for me after all. I certainly enjoy singing Karaoke, and can often be found at someone else's show on my off nights... But I also enjoy hosting... So to answer the original question, I'd probably have to say it's six of one, and half a dozen of the other. I like singing and hosting equally well. |

I'm not a good enough singer for a band. I'm content hosting, and playing guitar in a band. |

If I could get paid to sing karaoke then the answer would be sing, hands down. But I obviously enjoy hosting quite a bit. I sing at my shows if the rotation is short (<12) but usually try not to sing at all if I can keep the pace running. I love going to other shows to see what other hosts are doing that I can adopt for my shows and keep a finger on the pulse of requested music. -Chris |

I'm just a karaoke singer. I'm cool with that. I'd really love to try the live band karaoke experience just once, but I could never front a band. I'm the thing people think of when they think "karaoke singer." |

Hosting, hands down. Just an absolute blast. Now, I do love to sing, and do it at home all the time. If the opportunity arises I will go to other hosts' shows and sing. However, even then I get more of a kick out of watching and listening to others- to the point that if the KJ screws up and skips me I could care less. |

We were at an awesome show, and it was running late, and my girlfriend--who had to be up pretty early this morning--said something to the effect of "well, we'll leave after you sing again." Since it isn't a traditional show, the concept of rotation was a different sort of beast, and she got to sing before I did, and I was ready to go. As we were leaving, she apologized for being tired and for wanting to leave with the "I know how much you love karaoke" thing, and I had to explain to her--yes, I love karaoke. It doesn't necessarily mean I love singing. I hate the dead nights where the rotation is only six people and I get stuck singing ten songs. What I love is the whole thing, the experience, the other singers, the whole just-being-out-in-a-bar-with-other-people thing. |
