American Idol always starts up in January.

Wondering if any of the long timers have seen attendance at their own shows spike during the months that Idol is on TV?

no, not because of American idol.

January it's cold and people want to go someplace warm.

Here in Florida January is when we get swarmed by "snowbirds" so it would be very difficult to determine that. It would be busy no matter what.

This is what I think as well. Gets pretty cold here and attendance is up when the temp drops.

The overall trend in the Seattle area is that we see attendance drop beginning Nov 1st until April when the weather starts to warm up.

But it is worse in some areas than others. Downtown doesn't take as much of a hit as does the more rural areas. Downtown we have a lot more folks using public transit, taxis, and just plain walking. Obviously we have a lot more of that in the warmer months, but even during the cold months, we still have decent turnouts.

When you get out into the rural areas or anywhere that you have to actually drive to go to a karaoke show, we take a MUCH bigger hit during the cold months.

It is worse on weekdays than it is on weekends.

People do try "new songs" they have heard on the TV.

Yep these are always are slow months!
As far as Idol being an influence, it used to be in the first 3-4 years, not so much anymore.

Since the weather turned extremely cold here starting about 5 weeks ago, attendance at my Applebee's gig has gone through the roof. Packed house every Monday night. My other gigs are also doing exceptionally well.

I would think that people would want to stay indoors when the weather is cold, but that has not been my experience so far.

I am thinking about approaching Applebee's about adding a 2nd night because Monday nights are getting way too busy.

6 MONTHS of slowness? That's HALF your Year!

...and i get worried when i have a s-l-o-w week

No wonder trivia is getting more popular! Something different to keep the locals coming back, no?

Slower as in, how many singers in your rotations Lonnie vs. when it's busy-season?

In Hawaii i don't know a single person/ singer that watches Idol anymore.

The younger ones watch GLEE and ask for those remade songs :)

This is what it's like out here in rural Pennsylvania. A lot of the shows will post Facebook or send text messages to regulars because the bars will cancel the show. Our roads can be terrible.

We are rural/low economic area and do take a hit when the cold first hits combined with the holidays. It takes a bit for people to get cabin fever then they start coming out again. I usually like to do a Tropical Theme show in winter just to warm the spirits a bit.

American Idol doesn't seem to be on the radar as far as I can tell. I haven't heard anyone talking about it, anyway.

I have not seen a spike either with American Idol. I kind of figured during the first coupe of years, especially when venues were doing regular "Idol" contests, that there was a lot more spillover.

I wonder if we will see any other talent type shows that drive karaoke attendance?

No not every night is slow, weekends are still usually packed as are a couple of weeknights, but it's definitely a slowdown.

I usually avg 15 singers on any given weeknight with many of those singer that have at least one friend with them, on slower nights it could be as few as 5, on busier nights we've had 30+. But our slower nights isn't just lack of singers, their dart players and video game players don't come in as often either - especially between leagues.

We actually a season 6 American Idolist Sanjaya at our show a couple months ago. Nice guy!

The first couple of seasons, maybe- but now with "The Voice","X-Factor" "Empire Casino's Big Break", and other clones all of these shows have jumped the shark in my area. No effect anymore.

The only possible shows that might spike in my area would be those that are non-competitive. Say, a series based on people who are karaoke enthusiasts. A little more real.

Had my share of American idolist - back in Orange County SoCalif, David Archuleta & his dad Jeff came by my show to practice “Imagine” by Lennon. 1st & 2nd rotation same song. I noticed he didn't follow the words “and no religion too” replaced by “a brotherhood of man” both verses. Probably because of his Mormon upbringing in Utah. The battle between the two Davids in the finals, the rocker vs. the crooner, David Cook won AI's 7th season.
