Hi Guys
just a quick question when i used to run karaoke shows years ago i used to run a cable from the cd player into the tv and switch the tv to AV to show the lyrics.
i am now in the process of converting to pc and was wondering could i use a monitor instead of a tv as they are a lot cheaper?

cheers

You can, but the typical problem is that you can't then run multiple screens.

I would have to say Monitor vs TV is about the same if you are talking LCD flat screen type. Using a LCD TV is a good choice as you can run an S-Video cable direct from the laptop to the TV. I just purchased a 25ft S-Video Cable and a LCD TV for my private parties. I like the compact nature of the LCD and weight too. My wife made a padded slip cover for the TV for now, but I will be purchasing a hard case for it down the road.

My dell allows me to:

On laptop screen: Run my interface (Compuhost)
On 2nd monitor (42" plasma): Run lyric screen/visualisations
On TV (s-video): Run the same as above

I am running 3 screens, but only 2 independant displays - if that makes sense. The Plasma and TV are showing the same thing.

I WANT THAT!

I looked at doing it, and couldn't seem to get it done. How the heck do you set that up? I connect them, and only two of the three will work. I have a Dell Inspiron 1520.

OK, will run through it :)

1 - I ensure everything is plugged in before powering up
2 - Plasma is connected via VGA cable
3 - Little TV is connected via S-video (into SCART adaptor).

OK - then power up

4 - Ignore the Windows Control Panel Display applet - it is not your friend.
5 - I use the ATI applet
6 - Set up the desktop to span (extend) to the VGA monitor
7 - Turn the S-video on - it just clones the 2nd monitor (plasma).

Hope that helps!

Also, worthy of note - VGA splitters aren't expensive.

I thought I tried that and that it wouldn't turn on the S-Video. I guess I didn't fiddle enough.....

Thanks, cause sometimes all you need to know is that something is possible.

I only want one VGA (for the singer display). What is nice about the S-Video is that then I can extend to a venue TV if they have one available....

Yeah - as I say the biggest help here is using the graphic manufacturers own software - not the Windows one!

Someone went on a tear, giving out ban votes indiscriminately. I'd venture a guess as to the culprit, but to mention the name would just generate more attention. My vote is to ignore and move on.
