Karaoke comic got hijacked so I will term this differently...

Sometimes I notice that I fall into a habit at the end of a song

Wow good job that was mike up next is....
Good job Tina up next

IT reallly does take some thought on how to keep upbeat and inventive....what do you say and what do you talk about..

I have thought there has to be a website with music triva and tidbits to tell people.....joke and tease obviously....drink specials, take care of wait staff and bar tenders....but nite after nite it gets old....
What else is there to say

I'll tell a joke or two once in a while. One thing is to keep them on the short side, so as not to be taking up mic time while the singers are waiting. Sometimes, especially if I have a number of singers in the bar area (through the door) I'll say something like "Nice job Bob, that was good! Next up we'll have.......who'll be followed by John, then Rob and Mary." The other thing that does is if anyone needs to use the restroom, they have an idea of whose up for the next 2 or 3 songs. The thing you don't wanna do though is become a mic hog where ya get the singers wishing you'd shut up so they can sing.

Well, in order to keep it "Fresh" I like to do several things to Keep my shows upbeat and personal....
First I start talking about my Childhood, the early years when i was a shy, dorky Karaoke wanna be,(some singers eyes start to glaze over,) and how my sisters always teased and called me names, then I progress to my early Teen years, well that goes by very fast, it was kinda boring ya know???? Then my Adolescent and early adult years, my chest hair phobia, having flat feet, getting my hair to be so manageable whenever my ends would stick out. Of course my several years in "Therapy" really come in handy during real slow songs, and singers who need professional help.(at this time some singers are running out of the room,) I talk about my hours and hours of "Therapy" and of course how my "Therapist" said there was "NO HOPE" for me and that even my dog didnt like me, (but I digress,) I talk about all my multiple personalities and how it affected my decision to go into Karaoke, by the end of the night, its pretty "Dead" in the bar,(we find more suicide notes left on the table at this time,) so i just remind them to take care of the Bar Staff, and have another "Drink" for me, Then I take another "Valium" say good night and look forward to another show and another crowd I can "Dazzle" with all my "Banter" and hope that tomorrow will bring more singers to my show, Oh I also talk about my hernia operation and offer to show my scar off too!!!!!!

PS Hope this helps!!!!!!(LOL!!!)

Well mike it seems to me that the original trauma along with your un resolved " daddy love me " issues stems from the chest hair days. Try owning up to what part you played in this and k nock off the valium intake baby. I'm a firm believer in hot tea and oxycontin. Dr. Normal

Ad Lib can always spice it up. Theres always something new or strange happening, Use it with a touch of humor.

I do agree to draw the line at not taking up singing time with banter. Plenty of time between singers to joke a little once in a while. There may be such a thing as "Too Much". I dont think that banter should come after every singer, It may take away from their moment in the spotlight. Space out the Ad libs.

I like sound effects too, Especially when things go wrong.

Sound FX aren't too bad.. like the toilet flushing after a real good friend has just sung well... but be careful on who you use them on.. that can backfire really fast.. or Blowing up disco songs when dj'ing.. it has an appropriate time and place.. so do Comedy Audio Introductions to your show.. know your crowd before attempting such an act..

As you will probably have noticed, my my mouth is in gear before my brain and it works! Don't try too hard, just say what comes into your mind and your customers will get to know and love the REAL you! (Or not!)

One of my favorite karaoke jokes to use at a show is to say that I'm getting out of he karaoke business because I just signed a record deal with Columbia records. After letting that sit for a few seconds (to set the hook) I tell them that I get 12 for a penny and just have to buy three more at the regular price over the next two years!

Besides the usual 'Good Job" etc. and a little kudos to the bar staff (tips) annoucing any specials or upcoming bar events I do very little filler 'TALK" what ever time open before the next singer is called or gets to the mic I usually play MUSIC. I find it breaks up the night just enough to keep the NON karaokers entertained. I did find the karaoke comic interested. I think it would be a blast if we had some customers trying to stand up to a cdg

I offer to give them all an extreme Makeover, so when the come up to sing, the wrong song starts and they look so confused!!! Then they get it. I work a contest with that using 5 singers the winner gets a free drink on the house. Every week they seem to like that one more than some of the other things I do. I am thinking of bringing in some wigs and props and making someone up on stage before they sing their song, if they want to go along with it. Just some ideas I use myself.

there is a bar in San Fernando Valley that has "Porno" Karaoke, I am not kidding. They get actors from Porno magazines and movies to appear and sing, no touching or naked people or anything suggestive, but a lot of the Porno stars "LOVE Karaoke" and the newspapers who cover Adult films are now publishing articles about this new Fad of Porno Karaoke!!!

MV,
That Idea Reminds me of Lonnie's Cathouse on Printer's Alley In Nashville. it's nothing but the Finest.. L>O>O>K>I>N>G> Female KJ's and singers in that city... by the way.. they do let the crowd sing too..
for a price.. :P    ask me later... it's on the same lines of what you just posted.. but very professional as far as karaoke goes.. and the owners are very respectable too.. it needs to be seen to be believed.
